Earthquake in LA!

There has been a 5.8 earthquake in eastern Los Angeles. Early reports
are that it was centered in the Chino Hills area.

5.8 isn't a total disaster, but it's big enough to do some damage -
please check in, Californians!

Hi Jeanne. I'm okay in Simi Valley, about 75 miles from the epicenter.

Glad to hear you're ok, Joy :)

I hope my relatives in Orange County didn't have too much damage at
their house - it sounds like damage (so far) seem to be limited to
cracked walls, broken windows, things off shelves, and the like.

USGS has lowered the magnitude to 5.4. I wonder how many aftershocks
are yet to come, and how big they'll be.

I'm laughing a bit - we had a 3.(something) in Indiana earlier this
year, and everyone was freaking out (we just don't get them here). In
California, they don't even notice them.

I know what you mean. I don't usually feel anything under about a 4.5.
Yes, I hope your relatives in Orange County didn't have any problems. They
are closer to the epicenter than I am.

I haven't felt any aftershocks so far.

Unless the epicenter is right underneath you.

Last year I was sitting at my computer when I felt a brief, but rather
violent quake. I immediately looked it up on the USGS site, where I was
surprised (and a bit embarrassed) to discover that it was only a 3.2. OK,
there was no damage, and I still had electric power, but it was quite a
jolt. I was redeemed a bit when I saw that the epicenter was less than
a kilometer from my apartment building!

I'm surprised you made such a big deal over it. When I lived in Orange Country,
I experienced numerous 4.x quakes with the epicenter within 2 miles of me.

Earthquakes are pretty broad events. Wether the epicenter is under your ass
or 5 miles away makes little difference when a 30 miles stretch of land is
moving about.

My favorite type was when the ground would fall 5-10 feet and then do nothing
else.

Also: the first 5.x+ earthquake I experienced was at night and I recall
yelling at the housemates that I was sleeping keep it down!
Bed's headboard was bashing against the wall....

Yes, the location of the epicenter does make a difference. Did you feel
this one? Approximately where are you?

When the 1971 Sylmar quake hit (It was a 6.6), I was in bed. My husband was
sitting on the side of the bed, putting on his socks. I got annoyed with
him for shaking the bed.
