Harmon Of 'Bozo The Clown' Fame Dies At 83
Publicist Says Harmon Died Of Congestive Heart Failure

Larry Harmon, who appeared as Bozo the Clown for decades and licensed the
name to other Bozos around the world, had died at age 83.
Harmon died Thursday at his home of congestive heart failure, his longtime
publicist, Jerry Digney, told The Associated Press.
Although not the first person to play Bozo, Harmon took on the famous
clown's persona and, as an entrepreneur, he licensed the character to
others, particularly TV stations. Those stations then recruited their own
Bozos for local shows.

Harmon met his alter ego after answering a casting call to make personal
appearances as a clown to promote records. He got the job and eventually
bought the rights to Bozo.
Along the way, he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange tufted
hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume

Anyone who spent decades putting a little magic and wonderment in the
lives of children deserves recognition.

I was always terrified of clowns, even on TV, so I'm afraid I can't
say I was much
of a fan. But RIP, Mr. Harmon.

It's interesting how many people were afraid of clowns as children.
I guess not everyone finds them amusing. I wasn't afraid of them,
but I wasn't overly amused by them either. Also, when I was very
little, I sincerely believed that clowns were a different species
from humans. I didn't realize it was just makeup!

Also, my 2 younger sisters were on the Bozo show once when we were
kids. I forget why I didn't get on it - maybe I was too old. I think
I was around 12 at the time, and I remember hanging around the tv
station and peering through the curtains into the "ring" where the
show took place.

Went once as a kid with the family and hated it. Getting up at 6:00AM to
watch Modern Farmer (at about 7-8 Y.O.) was more my speed. At 9 I was
fixing my father's friend's CB radios. It got worse from there.

I didn't like parades as a kid, either. I thought they were extremely
boring, except for the moment when they would fire off cannons, which
I found terrifying. (I was frightened of loud, sudden noises as a kid.)
The whole military-style marching thing, with marching band, just wasn't
my aesthetic.

I also didn't like zoos or circuses. I thought they smelled bad and were
depressing. I guess I wasn't a very normal kid - didn't like parades,
circuses or zoos. No wonder my parents didn't know what to do with me. :)

What was Modern Farmer? I've never heard of that - what year(s) was this?

I still remember what creeped me out so bad. It was something about
the
painted-on smile, then if you got close you could see the real mouth
when
it wasn't smiling at all. And the white paint around the mouth always
made
the teeth look creepily yellow.

You were *on* the Bozo show! I remember going to our local kid-TV
show; the host wasn't a clown but a cowboy. It was a big deal for us
then.
