Do cats get the flu? My cat is sick :(
Yesterday, my cat Bear wasn't her normal self. She stayed in and rested on the
couch. At that time I just figured she was napping. Nothing out of the ordinary. When I got home last night from work, I could see she wasn't feeling good. She not eating and is weak. A few moments ago she threw up but no food was present. She is a healthy cat and always has been so I'm not sure what is wrong. Is is common for cats to get sick with a virus or flu like people do? She has all her shots so I'm hoping its just a passing illness. I'm hoping its nothing serious and that she gets better soon. I will be taking her to the vet today. |

If she goes outside, she could have eaten something bad or come in contact with another sick cat. Cats do get viruses, much like people, and no vaccination is 100% effective (just like the human flu vaccine, they help a lot, but don't always prevent sickness). More than likely, she'll get over it just fine, but if she ate a poisoned or sick mouse or bird, or other bad substance, she could get very ill. I'd take her to the vet just to be sure everything is cool, since she goes out and you don't know what she might have gotten into. My cats have never vomited with a normal "cold". So, it would worry me. Then again, I DO tend to be a little overly willing to bring my cats in to the vet. Better safe than sorry for me. ;) Hope Bear gets better. -- -- ~kaeli~ Once you've seen one shopping center, you've seen a mall. http://www.ipwebdesign.net/wildAtHeart http://www.ipwebdesign.net/kaelisSpace |

After spending $400 and scaring Sebbie (who was at the time a newly-socialized feral) by taking him to spend a weekend at the hospital three years ago with what ended up being called "fever of unknown origin," I give my cats 24 hours observation at home before calling in the vets when they're lethargic, lose their appetite, or lose their lunch. (More serious symptoms get them to the vet pronto.) A few months ago a bug went through my (at the time) three cats. For each it lasted 2 days: one day of lethargy with loss of appetite and/or vomiting, one day of diarrhea, then back to normal. One by one they started feeling poorly and then perked up again. I could have drawn a map of the progress of the virus through the tribe. All well afterwards, everyone back to top form eventually. So, yes, cats can get bugs just like people. I don't know about the flu, but minor bugs definitely. Priscilla |

I've wondered the same thing. I swear my cat had an upset stomach or a
"bug" one time. He threw up several times in a 24 hour period, didn't eat much and was not acting his normal self. He's an indoor cat so I don't think he got into something he shouldn't have. I called the vet, made an appointment for the next day, fed him Hill's I/D (which is for intestinal upsets), and gave him 1/4 of a pepcid. Next day he was fine, eating normally, not vomiting. So I canceled the vet appointment. Vet tech did tell me that cats can get upset stomachs sometimes. But it wouldn't hurt to have your cat checked out if her condition continues for more than a day or 2. S. "Haardvark2" wrote in message ... Yesterday, my cat Bear wasn't her normal self. A poster on another board noticed his kitty was lethargic and not eating and made an appointment. She seemed much better the next day and he almost didn't go, but decided to just in case, even though she seemed better. They discovered she had an enlarged heart and a murmur, plus a little fluid on her lungs. He now knows to be very vigilent and get her in the moment she seems off. So you just never know, so better safe than sorry. |

Cat's can difinately get the flu and colds. Our three kittens recently caught a cold from either the last one adopted (from an urban dog pound), the new dog (who came home with Kennel cough), or one of us. They were all coughing and sneezing constantly but had no loss of appetite or loss of energy. A trip to the vet and some meds cleared it right up. And then you paid to have their toes amputated. Which has less than nothing to do with this post. As long as you pose as a cat lover after what you did to those cats I will be here to remind others that you paid tohave your beautiful, sweet kittens mutilated for the sake of your UPHOLSTERED WALLS. I feel it is the least I can do. Here's some more ammo for you: I'm protestant and caucasion. I'm pro life. I'm not a huge fan of the death penalty but I think if we have it, we should use it. I don't spank my children but was spanked as a child. It did no lasting damage. I don't really have an opinion on circumcision and having only daughters, it's never a choice I had to make. However, my parents had me circumsized. I don't resent them for it. I don't think Pete Rose should ever be in the HOF and I don't want to see an Asterisk by Ichiro's, Barry Bond's, or Mark McGuire's name. I don't really have a political affiliation. Voted for Bush last time. I'll probably vote for Keery this time. I'm a Freemason. I don't give a crap about gays in the military if they're good at their vocation. We also own an Australian Shepperd puppy, a breed born with no tail. I'm not sure if they have always been a tailless breed or if the workload put on them by humans caused evolution to deem their tail unneccessary. If it's the latter, you could also in an indirect way accuse me of supporting tail cropping. I drive a truck that gets below average gas mileage. I'm a Red Sox fan. My wife an I lived together and had sex before we wed. I'm sure if you go through this list you can come up with a bunch of other things to persecute me for. Maybe start a petition in various newsgroups and websites. I have no warrants or even traffic tickets outstanding, but since I'm surly such a horrible person, maybe you could try to get me arrested for my oh-so aggregious offenses. At the very least, when I reply to a post on topic, you can come in off topic and remind everyone not only how I "paid tohave your beautiful, sweet kittens mutilated for the sake of your UPHOLSTERED WALLS" then maybe follow it up with something like " you Caholic hating, murder supporting, child neglecting, mutilation supporting, baseball history hating, Kerry loving, devil worshipping, gay loving, dog hating, ecology hating, yankee hating, unwedlocked sinner!" Or you could just get over it and leave me alone. You mutilated your three beautiful kittens that trusted you. YOU did that. Worst of all, you did it to benefit inanimate objects. Nothing can ever change that, and there is no getting over that. You had a choice and this is what you chose to do. None of the other things matter. |

You came here and told us you did something that all the active posters here think is horrid beyond belief. Worse, you justified it, as though you believed it was a perfectly acceptable thing to do. Worst of all, you knew going in that it was mutilation and did it not for anyone's sake at all but the sake of inanimate objects. Deal with what you get. Karma, dear. I hope you never, ever hear the end of it. / No, I'm not in the least saying the two issues are equal, and if anyone tries saying I meant it that way, I'm ignoring you for the moron you are. -- -- Nicely said, Kaeli. Or you could just get over it and leave me alone. That gets my vote, because it really has gotten old and the point was made at one post and should have been left at that. A Yankee (don't hate me.) |

I really probably shouldn't get involved in this in light of my history here, but an accidental declaw doesn't suprise me much. In this day and age when humans get the wrong leg amputated or the wrong organ excised inadvertently. I also recently heard about a story where a family lost it's dog, it arrived at the shelter via a good samaritan, and due to a clerical error, was euthanized NINE MINUTES LATER. No matter how much you disagree with or abhor the choice I made, it was still my choice to make. Sounds like your friend's cat was victim of incompitance. If I brought my cat or dog to the vet and asked for one procedure and they got a different, irriversible procedure I would be really ****ed. |

It was sadder still because they are sisters and play together, so now my friend has to worry about one hurting the other. Although there have been no problems except the declawed sister pees all over everything. |
