Maine Coon's M
 

Hello there i have a little maine coone and when i took her to the vet
the lady there said ohhh you have a maine coon. I didnt know what she
was talking about.hehe.Then she showed me the little M on her face. I
had never noticed it before. I was just wondering is that a thing that
all maine coons have?? Another thing is KissPurr (don't laugh at her
name all she does is kisses and purrs) lol
does not have really long hair so is she still considered a Maine
Coone? Any will her fur get longer over time??

She probably just meant that your cat may have a maine coon in her ancestry.
Your cat isn't "really" considered a maine coon unless she has papers to prove
it, but I promise that no one here will demand papers before allowing you to
call her a MC if that's what you want to do.

I've never heard of an "M" having anything to do with maine coons, but maybe
it's related. "Little" isn't a word generally associated with MCs, though.

Well a maine coone can be of a tabby coat and the tabbies have an "M" on
their forehead. There are several legends surrounding this. Just google
Tabby M forehead and you can read many lovely stories.

But she has a long neck, and a very long body. If she sees something
that scares/interests her and she lengthens her body to strain to
check it out, she looks so funny!

Your cat is only a Maine Coon if it has the pedigree papers to prove it.
That doesn't mean to say it doesn't look like a Maine Coon. Cats with tabby
markings, pedigree or not, tend to have the 'M' on the forehead. My plain
old feral rescue tabby has a very well-defined 'M' on his forehead.

I agree, beautiful "not Bengals" who sure could pass to us 'regular folks'
:) Everyone who sees a decent (natural light) photo has asked me if Persia
is a Russian Blue. She's got some in there somewhere, I just know it. But
like Cheryl, I wouldn't claim she was a true Blue.

They do look like bengals! The only tell-tale sign that the brown tabby
is not a purebred is the white bib (which I actually like very much,
mind you)... :)
They are gorgeous!

I know, I've been reading about Scarlett and our crew has been purring for
her recovery. The body type is also very much like the Bengal - that long
and lean physique is typical of the breed. I wouldn't be surprised if they
were purebred (at least half) Bengal's (people who buy cats from Breeders
aren't always responsible slaves!).

I've heard people mention the "mini coon", perhaps a hybrid of some
sort, or is there a recognized sub-breed? Rhonda looks like a classic
Maine Coon, except that she's about 6.5 pounds at 2.5 years of age.

standards is that Rhett's ears are too big (but he's only ~5 months
old and not done growing yet) and the "locket" on his chest. I like
it too. It's a purrfect equilateral triangle. lol The only reason I
was curious if they could be Bengals is because I'm not sure I'm up
for them. I get scared reading about their antics. ;)

and all the cats gather in there with me. Rhett and Scarlett
usually follow each other in circles on the bathroom floor, batting
at each others tails. lol It's the funniest thing I've ever seen!
Not running chasing tails, just walking. In circles. Each batting
the others tail. :)

Spicey does this too. Joanne calls it snake kitty. She also can stretch
her body long when she reaches up. She might have swollowed an accordian
but heer markings aren't traditional Tabby. When wet she's real narrow
boned. She eats well she's not starving.

They do calm down quite a bit after they turn into adults. However, they
are too smart and curious for their own good and will keep getting into

That's what I hear. Rhett definitely fits that bill already, but then
again, he's a hoolikitten. lol We'll see after a few years. He's
amazingly smart.

bathroom when the shower water is turned off - Scarlett in
particular has an affixtion on the water that comes from the faucet
when I turn the water off, and she gets soaked sitting in the wet
tub when I'm done showering. I think once the weather warms up I'm
going to fill the tub and see what they do. ;)

Heh..... Nina is a water kitten, too. =o) And although I firmly call
Francesca "A Tabby" her markings COULD make the non-expert wonder if
she is a marbled Bengal. Certainly, these girls are the most
water-friendly cats I've ever seen. Neither of these girls is a
purebred anything, I'm sure, but they are lovely, and marvelous
companions. I haven't invited either of them to jump in the shower with
me in case they end up not liking it. Being wet and naked with a cat
who is frightened and REALLY wants out is not my idea of fun. =o)

Both my cats loved the wet tub and the tap, but enough water to soak

Well hide all clumping litter when you do. My sister's friend had her bengel
just a while when he jumped in the shower with her. However, he then ran
through the cat box and she had to quickly bathe him so that he didn't clump
into a big ball!

Rufous does that exact same thing!!!! He loves chasing the few drops
falling from the showerhead, he ends up soaked sometimes.

Victor Martinez had some very interesting things to
say about Maine Coon's M:

The breed I'm really afraid of being owned by are Burmese. Based on
the Ollie Adventures and the exploits of Bonnie and Clyde, they're
very intelligent and permanent hoolikittens. :-)

Yup! It's weird then that our Tonkinese (who are half burmese and half
siamese) are so incredibly laid back!
