What possible use could she have had for it before? What use does
anyone ever have for a cat, beyond keeping the mice out of your grain
silos? Is there a world shortage of hair balls?

Cats have uses that go beyond keeping the rodent population down. For
one thing, having one lowers your blood pressure and heart rate. (The
same is true for dogs, BTW.) Besides, they're ****ing *cute*.

Of course, I *may* be a bit prejudiced....
