She continues to drink her rehydration fluid in preference to plain water - she has a choice. It has made a real difference to her, so thank you to those who suggested it. She is eating as well as a CRF kitty can. Turkey mince 12 secs in the microwave goes down well. Tomorrow I will offer her beef mince. What she really liked was when Boyfie brought her a vole on Sunday, she scarfed it down in a minute and a half which produced a good litterbox result the following day. I wish I could buy voles for her. Feeder mice from pet stores are close. And safer than wild caught voles. Why are they safer? They will be free of diseases and parasites that wild caught animals may have. Frozen mice could be gently warmed to blood temeprature before being offered to KFC, if that was preferrable. I couldn't do it, but maybe if KFC was my cat and it was good for her, I could get over my irrational revulsion. Yowie |

Get her a mouse. There is a reptile shop near where I work. They sell dead frozen mice and day old chicks but I don't know if she would eat one, defrosted. She likes them warm. 12 seconds in the microwave? -- Adrian (Owned by Snoopy, Bagheera & Shadow) Cats leave pawprints on your heart http://community.webshots.com/user/clowderuk |

I don't like killing animals and I _really_ don't like killing captive animals. But for one of my cats or dogs, for KFC or any of the cats I know well from the newsgroups, sure. Killing would be the hard part. Cooking for family is always a delight. Mice are neat and clean when raised that way and any adult mouse is almost at the end of its life, so I wouldn't feel too bad for it. omit rant about how hunting is more ethical and often more humane than stock-raising and slaughtering -- Will in New Haven |

It's odd, I have no real problem with humans buying animals for slaughter (so long as their parts are all packaged neatly in plastic when I get them). I know cats are carnivores, who hunt live critters and kill them for food, and I have no problem with that. But somehow, the notion of buying live mice to feed them to a cat bothers me! (I know it's inconsistent of me, but there you are.) Maybe it's not completely inconsistent. In the "wild" (OK, outside your home ), a domestic cat might hunt, kill and eat a mouse. But in that case, the mouse at least has a chance. It probably knows something about how to avoid being caught. And while it's obviously not foolproof, it must work some of the time, because if mice could never evade predators, they wouldn't last long. There is something a bit horrifying about delivering a live mouse to a cat (or pet snake) in a situation where the mouse has almost no chance of escape. It reminds me of those "canned hunting" ranches, not that I'm blaming the cat, of course. I suppose, though, that it's no more cruel than raising animals for meat - they don't have a chance to escape either, no matter how humanely they're raised. Domestication seems to tip the scales regardless of who is getting the food (ie, whether it's humans raising food for themselves, or feeding their domestic pets live prey in a contrived setting). Apparently the most natural and "fair" way for any animal to eat meat would be for them to hunt wild animals in their own environment. But that's not very practical, unless we all want to go back to hunter- gatherer societies.
