PawsForThought wrote: IMO, this stuff is poison and shouldn't be used at all. While I'm glad they're taking some action, Hartz should be pulling this completely off the shelves now. Press release from the EPA http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress...5?OpenDocument Hartz to Relabel and Cancel Flea and Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens Contact: Eryn Witcher, 202-436-2215/ (Washington, D.C.-- June 3, 2005) At EPA's insistence, Hartz Mountain Corp. has agreed to cancel uses of several flea and tick products that may be associated with a range of adverse reactions, including hair loss, salivation, tremors and numerous deaths in cats and kittens. The common pet product brand names which are involved in this action include: Hartz Advanced Care 4 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops Plus+ for Cats and Kittens; Hartz Advanced Care Brand Flea and Tick Drops Plus+ for Cats and Kittens; Hartz Advanced Care 3 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens; and Hartz Advanced Care Once-A-Month Flea and Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens. In the short term, the agreement calls for immediate relabeling of the products. The new labeling will state that the products of concern are not to be used on the most vulnerable animals, including cats and kittens that weigh less than 6 pounds, cats older than 13 years, or kittens less than 5 months old. Hartz will stop all new production of the cat and kitten products by September 30, 2005, and not sell or distribute any affected product after December 31, 2005. The measures announced today will help ensure pets are protected. Pet owners should pay close attention to new labels and exercise good judgment when choosing pet products. "EPA is taking this action because there are safety concerns with these products,'' said Susan B. Hazen, principal deputy assistant administrator at EPA. "Pet owners should be alerted to these concerns, and may choose to transition to alternative products. We take seriously our obligation to ensure that pesticide products, when used as labeled, are safe." The company agreed to a prohibition on any remaining retail sales by March 31, 2006. This orderly transition allows consumers and distributors to move to alternatives flea and tick products and will be strictly monitored. Hartz will also be notifying their distributors and retailers of the changes in order to ensure a workable phaseout. As with any pesticide product, all label directions and precautions should be carefully followed to ensure the product is used correctly. It is prudent to follow the new restrictions for all products, including existing stocks. After a public 30-day comment period, EPA intends to issue a cancellation order and an amended registration, which will be effective by October 31, 2005. I had been wondering about it. Remember, the EPA ordered Hartz to conduct an independent 2-year study on those products back when the EPA FIRST ordered changes in the labels. I knew it was close to 2 years ago. I'm not quite sure though, exactly what's happening. First it says it is ordering the re-labeling, and then mentions stopping all production. That stuff is poison. And Hartz is a name a lot of people trust, so they didn't have any qualms about buying it. I've read/known so many cat owners whose cats died from that stuff. Sherry |

Hartz is pretty sad, vor a comapny. I used to buy some of thier stuff, but
because of this crap they've put out (and I believe I used, and it *might* have been the cause of the CRF that killed our Princess Ivy Punkinhead Puffybutt), I've stopped buying *anything* with the Hartz name on it - even the cat toys. Fortunately, I've not seen any Harz brand toys at PesMart, but I did see the Harz flea/tick stuff, and when I told the manager about the instances of it makeing cats/kittens sick, or even causing their death, he said he would investigate it. A couple days later, the product was no longer on the shelf. I asked an employee about it, and they replied that they were no longer carrying it! Yay for our local store!!!! Sorry about Princess Ivy Punkinhead Puffybutt (cute name!) Lauren There are some pet-store managers out there that actually *do* care for the animals!!!! I don't know if he got in trouple for "bucking the system" or not, but thre is no more Hartz flea/tick product on their shelves - not even flea collars! Space is now filled with KMR and kitten-raising kits Yeah, Ivy was a sweety. Long haired calico, and sooooooo sweet. Forget what you hear about "calico temperament"..... not her - unless you were a mouse . Unfortunatley, we hadn't used any flea treatment for a couple of years before she became ill, so it didn't dawn on me that she always hated getting it, acting like there was a small fire on her shoulders when it was applied, and that it *might* have caused her illness. Now we use Frontline Plus, but only when necessary (all our cats are indoors, so it's only applied if they somehow get out - and it's happened - to make sure that we *don't* end up with fleas!). The Thanks for posting this. Two months ago, in regarding to our cat's hind leg sore (that I thought might be from carpet mites or fleas), I asked the vet if I should use the Hartz Mountain products since the ads said they were safe. His response was, "Absolutely not"! Reason - when the powder dries, it gets into the cats nostrils, is very toxic and causes major respiratory problems. |
