Scouty the lap cat?! Who'da thunk it!
Our great big furry chicken seems to have made some kind of a quiet
breakthrough again... she's always had conflicting impulses - to get as close to meowmie as possible while purring her head off, while avoiding the Daddy Monster and not actually allowing anyone to pick her up... she still hates being handled, but she's somehow overcome her fear of laps! (meowmie's lap, anyway...) Fairly often lately if I'm sitting at my computer, she'll come along and walk in front of me and put one paw up on my tummy and then stop like she's thinking 'I don't know what to do next' and walk away... last week she took the plunge and climbed onto my ample tummy for a cuddle. Yesterday she went back and forth from my lap to the top of the monitor for about half an hour... Most surprisingly to me, yesterday was claw-clipping day, and she let me do it by myself! She wasn't thrilled about it, but she didn't struggle very much, and then she resigned herself to the experience and let me go ahead and trim her scimitars. The one time I tried to do her by myself before this, it was a total failure because she bolted as soon as I lay her on her back on the bed! Usually John holds her, she fights, and we try to get her front paws done before she escapes. I was astonished that she let me do it... but I was pretty sure that she wouldn't let me handle her again for at least a few days - and here she is this morning happy as a clam, climbing onto my lap and kneading a hole in my leg I'm SO PLEASED FOR HER! |

Have you ever thought about trying the Soft Tips? I have a friend with
a touchy cat and she thinks using them is less traumatic. I think she was meant to be a lap cat. If a cat likes scritches, and they know hoomin ergonomics, then it just makes sense for them to find the warm surface where scritches and cuddles come most readily. |

Hurray for Scouty! It took Cali 2+ years to become a lap cat and it only happened because I was sitting in HER Basket chair. |
