And he's eating! (beef baby food - can't say I blame him for refusing a/d)

He has a very long, ghastly looking (angry red) stapled up incision - will
post a pic of it later - but seems happy and comfortable.

We are thrilled that's he back and doing so well.

Did they give you pain medication for him?

No. We asked for them, but Dr. said the only pain he will have will be
during a BM and then only if the stool is not very soft. They gave stool
softener.

He really seems to feel fine. In fact if he slips out of Dave's room, he
wants to run all over the place and play with everyone.

Gawds, I can't imagine that! I saw my surgeon today and he "snipped"
what he said was nerveless scar tissue between two openings in my wound
and even after *lots* of pain killers I'm still over the moon in pain.
Major stomach surgery like that has got to hurt. But I guess the
creature best in the world at hiding pain would not show it. I can't
help it, that has got to hurt - my cats squeal when I step in a stray
tail. But I also know he'll get better soon and will definitely forget
all about the pain, and his pain, like mine, is a *GOOD* thing because
it means we're alive when we probably both should have been dead, so
never mind, he's probably running around giddy from that. ;

I can scarcely imagine it either, Lori. I've had abdominal surgery myself,
and there was definitely pain afterwards. I can't say it was severe pain, I
turned down pain meds at the time, but it hurt some. So I wasn't too shocked
at TED's decision.

He has talked with me on the phone more in one week than the other vet did -
including in his office - in ten years. I didn't keep track of the number of
times he called or the minutes spent in conversation, but I know he called
every day at least once and several days called twice, and at times I was
bemused at how long he could go on and in how much detail about every little
thing related to the case. He seems very competent compared with other vets
I've known.

Anyway what I'm getting at is that a relationship of trust has developed. I
didn't press him at length about pain meds - he was busy at the time - but I
trust his decision and I'm certain he would jump at the chance to provide
them if I did insist on them, but the fact is the cat *really doesn't* seem
to have pain! As fantastic as that sounds, I can touch the incision, even
press lightly on it, and he doesn't flinch, doesn't cry out or give any
indication of discomfort. If that changes at all, I will be on the phone to
TED immediately.

I had abdominal surgery years ago, and I woke up to the most excruciating
pain I have ever felt. I kept asking for something for it, and the nurses
would tell me that I had been given pain medication before I left surgery.
A couple of hours later, a nurse finally came in and apoligized--they had
forgotten to give me the regular pain medication before they sent me to
recovery. It was dreadful and something I have never forgotten. I would
*never* let a vet send one of my furbabies home without pain medication
following major surgery, especially abdominal surgery. I think a vet who
would do that should have to undergo surgery himself/herself without any
pain medication and see just how it feels.

Mickey didn't wake up without pain meds. He also spent a full 24 hours in
the
hospital on pain meds after the surgery.

I agree with you, Mary. I had abdominal surgery last Dec. and was on a
morphine
pump for five days.
It sounds as if Mickey *doesn't* have bad pain. IME cats who are in
bad pain hide,
don't want to move.
Any vet worth his salt knows that pain inhibits healing. By giving
them meds, they're
not just making the cat more comfortable, they're helping the healing
process. Yoda
always got 2mg Tramadol (Human form, from a compounding pharmacy).
The first day or two are the worst. I'm puzzled why the vet didn't
give him a pain
injection before he came home.
Anyway, I'm glad he's better.
I never got angrier at a vet than I did when I took a stray in for
spay; the vet advsied
me that pain medication would be "an extra twenty dollars." I was
specifically
angry for three reasons; One, there should be no question about
whether or not to
administer pain meds after surgery. Two, The way he presented it to me
i felt as if
I was being held hostage for 20 bucks; Three, this must have been at
least a hundred
percent markup on the drug itself.

**** you for not insisting on pain meds and not filing a board
complaint against a vet that refuses pain meds to a cat that just had
such an invasive surgery. Neither of you should be able to come within
100 miles of any feline. You are both animal abusers.
