(OT) Talk about Rip-offs
I got something in the mail today addressed to my mother. I expect to get
things addressed to her for years to come. But here's the thing. It was from the MOAA (Military Officer's Association of America). If she were still alive she'd probably have sent them the information they wanted without even thinking about it. Because after all, Dad was a military officer. She'd have thought nothing of it. Except it said she'd joined 11/27/2008. Huh. She died 11/22/2008. It's a scam. They're after her credit card information. It's like those Sheriff's Associations or the State Troopers (which have absolutely nothing to do with the sheriff's department or the state troopers.) You may have noticed I'm feeling a little ****y lately. This is one reason. Scammers, all over the place. Most notably trying to rip off the elderly. I was at the bank a couple of weeks ago and there was an older gent trying to cash one of those Nigerian bank scam checks. The teller told him the check was no good. I just hope he didn't give them his bank account information before he checked with the bank. Jill |

In the UK, we have departments of the County Councils known as "Trading Standards", who will investigate this type of scam. It's fraud, or attempted fraud. Do you have a similar department in your State, or can you file a police report? You may have noticed I'm feeling a little ****y lately. This is one reason. Scammers, all over the place. Most notably trying to rip off the elderly. Indeed. They're world-wide. :-( -- MatSav |

In the U.S. we have local and national branches of the "Better Business Bureau", but they mainly function as a source of information - they can tell you whether an outfit is legit or not, but that assumes you have the good sense to ask BEFORE you reply to the scammer. |

If the scam comes through the mail, send it to the Postmaster General in Washington, D.C. MLB |
