I tried watching House, but I just couldn't stand Laurie's
accent in it. :P

Not because you thought it was badly done, I hope! I would have
been
totally fooled into thinking he was American born if I hadn't
already
known he wasn't before seeing the show.

I had been watching the show for some time before I found out he
was British.

The first time I saw him on a talk show I was stunned to hear the
British accent! He had me completely fooled There was an old
sitcom (Still Standing) and actor Mark Addy had me fooled, too.

Mark Addy was just wonderful in that. More than just the accent. He
made you think you knew guys almost just like him.

I think part of what made it work, he didn't just play it as 'some
American guy' but as a very specific sort from a very specific
geographic region.

Here in Canada we all sound pretty alike, quite similar to Americans

And then there's that "ote and abote" thing.

Do they just sound bad because I know they're not really British, or are
they actually just bad? The two I have in mind are Renee Zellweger in the
Bridget Jones movies and Gwynneth Paltrow in a movie called Sliding Doors.
I mean, they don't sound *horrible*, but I'd never fall for it.

I haven't seen the films, but I just watched the trailers on YouTube.
Zellweger was pretty good in the first Bridget Jones film - you could
maybe just detect the odd American sound, but nothing that grated. In
the second, I couldn't tell her from a native. Spot-on.

OK, I'll take your word for it.

I HAVE known guys just like him! Just regular working-class joes. They
always seem to cancel shows I like. No explanation, just suddenly they're
gone and replaced with some really stupid TV show. It's a good thing I love
to read

That one was on for several years. I think the kid actors grew up on
them.

It was a favorite of mine too.
