Question. Elder statescats. Poll as well

He's got the gravitas that the position needs. Robbie is an Elder statescat because he's 12 and takes blood pressure tablets. Helen M |

Although I'm owned by one, I really don't know! Stinky stubbornly maintained cheeky youngster demeanor until around 15 or 16. He also was a really late bloomer as a mouser, becoming a master of the art around the same time. -- Theresa, Stinky and Dante drtmuirATearthlink.net Stinky Pictures: http://community.webshots.com/album/125591586JWEFwh |

So I ask you when do they join the elder status quo and do you have any in that age range? I think the oldest cat in a multi-cat household probably acheives that status earlier than younger cats and single-cat household cats. Other than that, I think it depends on the personality and behavior of the cat. Maggy May is our senior at sixteen. A retired mommy-cat, she is certainly sedate, most of the time. She also enforcers her seniority with paw or purr, whichever is appropriate. Sunrise is ten and seems to think she's still a leading lady, in fact a diva. Missy is nine and still lives with her mother, Maggy May. I think it is hard to be a senior when you live with mom. WooToo is eleven or twelve and came into our household rather late, having been my mom's last cat. She is a senior also, I think. Winnie RB, was eight, also Maggy May's child and a gallant young lad all of his life. We all miss him. -- Will in New Haven |

When, in your opinion do our owners achieve elder statescat status. Tanada
will be 16 in two weeks. TED has been calling her an old girl for about four years now. In our household it seems to be when they stake their claim to the Throne, i.e. the pillow in the bedroom from where you can see everything that's going on without moving a paw. Ishmael was the first to install himself on it, spending most of the day there and not letting any of the others near it. But when he was dying he let Muriel share it. After him, Muriel took it over and snarled at anyone else who thought of using it; and when she was dying she let Ishtar on it with her. Now Ishtar has got it all to herself, but I can't see her living more than a few months. Chloe (about 10) is younger than Ishmael was when he first Ascended the Pillow, so there might not be an immediate successor. ==== j a c k at c a m p i n . m e . u k === http://www.campin.me.uk ==== Jack Campin, 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland == mob 07800 739 557 CD-ROMs and free stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, and Mac logic fonts |

Question. Elder statescats. Poll as well

I just realised I never even thought of Nikki as elderly, even though she was nearly 17 when she passed. She just kept her kittenish looks and feisty, healthy, playful behaviour right to the end (which made her death even more of a shock). That's what Louie did. One day he was his usual feisty, Maine-Coon-ey, loving playful boy; two days later we discover he's full of inoperable cancer and so we let him go. It was a HUGE shock. And it hit J really really hard. Louie was HIS cat, in much the same way that Belle was MY cat. Or rather, that we were each quite ineluctably the proper slave for each of them. Spooky is clearly elder, and treated as such by the other cats - he's about 21. Fluffy is 16, considers herself young, and is treated as such. Tigger is about 12 and is in the 'elder' class. I think it has more to do with the cat's overall health and condition than with age per se. -- T.E.D. ) |

The vet delayed putting him on Mature Cat food because of his history of urinary blockages. He definitely has slowed down quite a bit. Winnie |
