Lack of commas is definitely the number one offender!


I'm soon retiring from 30+ years in advertising work for a boiler company. I
have spent years putting technical papers into readable English (or at least
trying to make the meaning unambiguous), and found that the major problem
was too many commas. For some reason, the engineer types I worked with used
lots of commas when they could use a period and start a new sentence. After
a while I figured that they loved commas because they were more complex (a
dot with a curlicue) than periods (which after all were only dots).
