I got FIRED on Thursday!! There was no issues, no warning, no clue.
The project manager just said that he needed to speak to me, and
that
was it. They wanted me Off The Project, and I wasn't even allowed
to
go back to my office to pick up my purse. He had to go get it for
me. My co-workers have to pack up the rest of my stuff.

That really and truly stinks.

But don't take the not being allowed to go back into the office
personally. Its pretty much standard procedure a lot of places.

True, but it's still a bit humiliating.

There was one guy who was fired who didn't take it very well. And he was
known to keep a gun in his truck. That's the only time I'd seen armed
guards posted around the building to prevent him from coming back inside.
IIRC, before that they let people gather their own personal items (under
supervision).

I've been there almost exactly 4 years. Everybody seems to like me. A
couple of departments think I can walk on water because I always take
the time to take care of them properly (helping them with computer
stuff). One of my co-workers called me at home to find out details,
and he says that this is 'messed up'. Even the project manager was
****ed. There's something funny going on, and he needs ask some
questions. Meanwhile, I have full pay until the end of July, and
benefits until the end of August. That's it. 2 months to find a new
job.

I spent most of Friday evening on the phone, yelling that 'that Rat
******* FIRED me!!' I had to get that out of my system, you see,
because calling him 'that rat *******' in an interview wouldn't go
over well. *grin* Officially, this is going to be called a layoff,
so getting a new job shouldn't be a problem.

I would enjoy this 'vacation' so much more if I knew when the ending
would be.

*sigh*

The Princess Rita doesn't seem to care that I'm home. I think this is
going to hit really hard on Monday, when I have nowhere to go.

What reason was given?

The boss claimed that I didn't know my job well enough. Anyone who
actually *works* with me says that he's a liar and it's a bogus
charge. I'm contract, he's government, so there's no chance of
fighting it. They are talking about outsourcing the data center, and
this may be just the first in a long line of unfair firings just so
the government doesn't have to pay severance.

Your tax dollars at work, folks.

I feel your pain. I work in higher ed but I am contract and the outsource
bug is always biting on someone or other above me. At my age and my
limeted degree status I would be in sad shape if they dumped me. I hope
things work out for you; you symbolize many of us here, I think.

Another casualty of our "downsizing" economy, perhaps? However the
White House tries to "tweak" the statistics, huge quarterly losses,
industry closing more and more plants and branch offices, and thousands
of workers (in nearly all fields) being laid off does NOT indicate an
economic "boom". (And cutting welfare payments and veteran's benefits
to help fund an unjustified - and unsuccessful - war only makes the
situation worse!)

nahh it's the dems fault. Everything that this gov does that goes bad is
the dems fault. If the reps were in office for 30 years it would still be
the dems fault. If every dem was dead for 30 years it would still be their
faults.

Plus...they are pushing the costs off to the state you live in.
Because being officially "laid off", you are entitled to unemployment
benefits (so be sure to call your local unemployment department,
or whatever they call it now, Monday morning first thing).

You may also have a job action possibility, depending on the terms
of the contract.

You should also be eligible for COBRA (carrying on your group
health insurance) benefits, if you pay the premium, for 18 months
after the last day they pay for, so don't buy the "one month more
insurance" thing.

You may want to consult a local lawyer knowledgeable about employment.
It may not make any difference, but it just might.

(been there, done that...only I was a full-time employee, not a
contractor, and suddenly I was "incompetent". Actually, I was the
scapegoat du jour. So might you be. It probably has very little
to do with your competence or abilities....be warned that this may
kneecap you when you don't expect it, it did me. Suddenly I didn't
feel like I was able to do ANY job. And now...I have a job I
adore! and they love me bunches. Just got a raise, in fact! So
hang in there)

Wow. This kind of inhumanity is getting to be more and more the normal
course of things, the normal way business treats its labor. This is so
damaging to a person in so many ways, not just the economical-- but not to
minimize the economical. Purrs that the disruption is brief.

{{{{{{{{{ Jane }}}}}}}}} The way you got fired would be illegal here.
Purrs that you find an even better job asap.

Here too, up until a couple of years ago, and the new government is trying
to fix that. Its outrageous they didn't even allow you to get your purse!

Purrs that you find a better job with a more stable, logical, rationaly
management!

Meanwhile, enjoy your time with Rita.

Aside from the fact that the "reason" was obviously bogus, even if it were
true, that would be no excuse for not letting you go back to get your own
purse. What a jerk!

Wow, that's awful! I'm really sorry. I can't believe how some places
treat their employees. I really hope you find something soon. I know
what you mean about not being able to enjoy the time off when the future
is so uncertain.

BTW, whenever I've been laid off from a job, they've been very cautious
about me getting my stuff, and often have someone there watching over
me while I pack up, to make sure I don't do any damage in retaliation.
Since these people have treated you so badly, they have every reason
to fear you, even if *you* know you wouldn't retaliate. They know they're
screwing you, so they assume you'll screw them back if given a chance.

Still, I think it really sucks that you can't get your personal stuff.
What if there's something there you really need?? And having your
co-workers pack up your stuff - I would hate that. I'm very private
at my jobs.

Anyway, purrs for you to find a new job right away. What kind of work
do you do? And tell Rita she'd better appreciate you being home!!

That's it, then. They're saving money by treating you like dirt. Ugh!!
At least you know it's not your fault, if that helps at all.

One thing I don't understand, though, is that if their official reason
for letting you go is a "layoff", then how do they get out of paying
severance?
