Georgia launched a major military offensive today to retake the breakaway
province of South Ossetia. Rebel leaders said about 1,400 had been killed.

The offensive prompted Moscow to send tanks into the region in a furious
response that threatens to engulf Georgia, a staunch US ally, and Russia in
all-out war.

It was by far the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won
de-facto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992. Witnesses
said the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali was devastated.

I guess I should read beyond the headline...

The Russian incursion began after Georgia launched a major military
offensive to retake control of South Ossetia, which has enjoyed de facto
autonomy since the early 1990s but officially remains part of the country.

Georgia did start it and then Russia launched a massive assault.

What worries me is that Putin has threatened to nuke the US over our
intervention in Georgia. There are US forces involved - albeit covertly - in
this conflict right now.

Russia is siding with the S Ossetian rebels. Israel has "military
advisors" there, assisting the Georgian troops. Georgia is also an ally of
the US. And there is a LOT of oil involved.

This could grow very messy and could involve a lot of the world.

WHY can't we keep out of internal conflicts in other sovereign nations?
We seem so eager to take sides in differences among the various USSR
splinters, with no real understanding of what's actually going on in
those regions! (Certainly our moron president hasn't a clue - he
probably thinks it's Georgia, USA that's involved!)

There you've said it all! If there were no oil there, no government
would give a damn about the "poor, downtrodden citizens of....." wherever.

This could grow very messy and could involve a lot of the world.

Well, considering how thinly our US troops are already spread, who wants
to bet the "peacetime" draft won't be reinstated? Given the way our
government has opted to treat our veterans, and servicemen's families,
how many young people believe the glowing promises in all those
recruitment ads on TV?

The way I heard it was that South Ossetia broke away from Georgia and
rejoined Russia, so Russia is just protecting it's own.

This could grow very messy and could involve a lot of the world.

No doubt. Not what we need more of.
