My PC is working again, mostly
Glad to see you back again CATherine! We've missed you. How are you?
Hugs, CatNipped "CATherine" wrote in message ... Hiya, folks!! It has been a long time. Several things were going on all this time; but I am mostly back in business. My son explained what he was sure was the trouble with my PC. As usual, when he speaks the foreign language known as Techie, my eyes glaze over and the valves between my ears open wide so the meaningless language can pass right through! ;-D But I did retain a few words about "old version of Direct CD driver" and we can't afford newer right now. He also mentioned "instability" and up-dating on certain web-sites that didn't like IE and OE from ME as well as WIN98. BTW, I am now on WIN 98 v2. Wonderful! But IE and OE had problems, so he installed Mozilla. I have been learning all about using it. It works great, even on the things that bogged down IE and OE. But I still use Forte Agent for newsgroups. In the meantime, when he was re-installing, he couldn't find the old cd for ZoneAlarm. Don't know what happened to it. Of course, his room looks like a rat's nest! But I went and bought the latest version of ZoneAlarm Pro. It was on sale with a $10 rebate! He still has some tweaking of settings going on from time to time and all my extra programs to install. The bad thing about WIN 98 is that it doesn't have my favorite Solitaire game--Spider. But my sister is sending her cd of games that has it. But without the newest version of the Direct CD Driver, he said don't view any movies. Media Play won't work, I guess; or maybe it will cause the blackout/reboot again. So now, if other problems with mundane life don'r interfere, I can start posting again. But I won't even try to reply to the thousands of posts i missed! I will just send blanket purrs for all. -- CATherine |

One big advantage to FireFox is that you pick up less spyware with it. But, you should be aware that there are firewalls as good as, or better, than Zone Alarm, and are free. I use Sygate Personal Firewall, and you can also purchase a version which allows you to do more configuration. -- Dick #1349 "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." ~Benjamin Franklin Home Page: dickcr.iwarp.com email: |

Purrs for your work load to not be too heavy and especially strong purrs and
best wishes for you to drive safely, -- Polonca & Soncek "CATherine" wrote in message ... I am glad to be back; although I won't have much time for a few weeks. One of the girls at work quit without notice and we were short-handed anyway. So I will be putting in some long hours. During these cold, dark days. I don't like to drive after dark. And I don't like to drive on slick icy roads...after dark. snip |

I am very grateful for my resident geek. He has taught me a lot, and at my own pace. And he sets up security on my pc to a high level. I have never (since i got off alo several years ago) had the problem with spam and porn that so many people talk about here. Now, with Mozilla, I won't even have those annoying pop-ups and spyware. As for your saved things, I recommend backing up everyhting on cd's, just in case. Here, at least, cds are cheap. How are they there? I don't know, since I don't even have a cd burner. I have thought of getting one. Just think, I might lose all my F&N piccies! Maybe I'll get one for myself as my Yule present. I've started using Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, too, and I like them. Of course, where I work everyone else is a computer geek, so I might go there for advice. I'm not very good at asking for advice, though. Actually I am using Mozilla Suite--firefox and thunderbird together. I really like it. So far, all I have done on the Internet is read the daily soap operas, pay a few bills and view a few pictures some of the group posted. And not one pop-up showed up!!! And thunderbird is so intelligent. It already has my junk mail figured out...not that I get much, anyway. My son likes ZoneAlarm because our computers are net-worked. Also, he is into some Security groups that he says the concensus is they trust Zonealarm the most. My son says some of them are sort of paranoid about security; I think my son is, also. But I would rather he be that way than careless and trusting and credulous like so many people I meet, including my own siblings. Sorry to butt in here, but he's probably not paranoid, just realistic. Security is a trade-off of convenience versus risk. The safest thing to do is to keep your computer offline; short of that, everything is a compromise. Just as an example, computers can be taken over and used to store illicit materials, like kiddy porn, or if you're lucky, just mounds of illegally copied music and movies. Good luck proving that you're not the one who put it there. Some spammers have started hijacking personal computers to mail their spam, saving their computers work and setting you up for the fall. Then there are the ones who redirect banking sites to their own machines so that they can collect your username and password ... It's not paranoia if someone's out to get you. Then there are the ones who redirect banking sites to their own machines so that they can collect your username and password ... all this is true, but I am not convinced that Zone alarm is the best out there. On the other hand, Symantic seems to do just fine for stopping most things, and avoiding IE as much as possible helps alot. My wife fires up IE from time to time, and I have to come along and clean up after it. On the other hand, Microsoft just announced a major upgrade to IE to plug up some security holes to help prevent that sort of thing. It's not paranoia if someone's out to get you.
