Default May be putting cat down in coming days

Hi All,
I've posted here before (Thanks to Flippy for posting Squeaky's last great
adventure http://www.flippyscatpage.com/squeaky.html) and found you all very
supportive.

Squeaky started getting sick about 2 months ago. He's gone from his normal
10-11lbs down to about 6 and a half. I just brought him home from the vet
today after x-rays. It looks like either bowel disease or cancer. They
don't think it's bowel disease, they said to see that kind of thickening of
the intestine walls we would have seen vomiting and diarrhea for about a
year. I thought maybe it was the Revolution flea treatment, he could be a
poster boy for the side effects. My sister in law is a vet tech, I'm going
to ask her tonight if she agrees with the vet's diagnosis, I imagine she
will. So we will probably have it done by Monday at the latest.

Any thoughts you may have are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jodie

I'm sorry to read about this probable bad news situation.

I had a cat with similar symptoms, and it turned out to be cancer of some part
of the intestines that sounded like mezzinary; perhaps someone can advise.

It was deemed inoperable, but potentially controllable for a while with
chemotherapy. They gave Sludge 4 - 6 months, and she astonished everyone by
living 2 1/2 years with a pretty good quality of life until the last couple of
days, which suddenly became grotesque.

So the upside is that, if it's cancer, it is potentially controllable for a
while, although rarely cured.

The downside is the considerable expense, the frequent treatments by a
veterinary oncologist - a couple times a week to start, tapering down to once
a week and then less frequent, and the back-of-the-mind knowledge that you're
merely stalling for time, maybe brief, maybe considerable. Note that we're
talking about chemicals that the normal veterinarian is not qualified to
handle.

Best of luck. I went to look at Squeaky's pictures, but Flippy's site is
rejecting connections at this precise instant.

Sorry to learn about Squeaky's troubles. He looks so sweet in the picture.
I hope you will have some good news and some more good times together.
Can you get a second opinion and advice from another specialist or
something?

Dear Jodie and Squeaky,

I don't have any advice to offer you but we will send purrs, meatloaf
meditations, healing thoughts and prayers that Squeaky isn't suffering
from cancer and can be cured.

Purrs for you & Squeaky.

Just wanted to let you know that I read his story, and I had a similar
experience with Ivy (RB 12/2002), about 4 months before she passed on. She
was ill with CRF (chronic renal failure), and it was quite a surprise to me.
She liked to sleep with us, but would get up at about 3 or 4am and go
"hunting", her usual catch being one of the multitude of 'real fur' mice
lying around the house. Once she 'caught' her 'prey' she would bring it into
the bedroom and meow very loudly to wake us, so that we could praise her for
her 'catch'. One morning I woke at 3am and couldn't get back to sleep, so I
was sitting in the 'office' (aka spare bedroom/computer room) messing around
on the internet (probably browsing eBay for anything Power Puff Girls ),
when I hear a VERY loud "MOEW" right behind me. There sat Ivy in the
doorway, proudly displaying her 'catch'. I got up from my seat, patted her
on the head, said 'good kitty' and stepped past her to go to the bathroom
(the real reason I got up anyway, but got sidetracked by the 'call of
eBay'), and on the way my bare foot brushed the 'mouse'. It was warm!!!! I
took a closer look, and lo & behold, my CRF kitty had actually caught a REAL
mouse!!! At that point, DH came stumbling on his way to the bathroom, and I
picked up the mouse by the tail, and said, "look what Ivy caught", and he,
in his sleepful state, mumbled something to ghe effect that it was nice, she
caught a toy mouse, to which I replied, "It's a REAL mouse". That woke him
up, and he looked at Ivy with respect.

I remember the story - well, at least I remembered it after I clicked
and started reading it. It gave me hope that one day my Little Bit may
actually catch something LOL

Anyway, it's pretty obivious that you love Squeaky, and you have my
thoughts, prayers and hugs as you go through this very worrisome and
painful time.

My husband and I talked about it this evening. We are going to go ahead and
have him put down. The vet is pretty sure it's cancer in which case we
would be looking at that option anyway and he's so weak I don't want to put
him through surgery probably just to find out that is the case. But I will
always wonder if we were wrong.

Never wonder. You make decisions in your heart. We have all been there;
you can't second guess your instinct. I'm so sorry.
