She didn't know she had it until they did her blood work at Mayo.
They found her liver enzymes were astronomically high. Then they
discovered she had hemochromatosis. She told me that they then
called her and told her that she had brought it on herself by
drinking. I don't know if that's the case or not.

It's an inexcusably vicious and misleading way to describe the
situation. Haemochromatosis is a genetic syndrome which is
worsened by alcohol, but at a level that would not be a problem
for most people. Since most folks with haemochromatosis don't
know they've got it, it's ridiculous to blame them if they drink.

Allen, you're welcome to stick around here if you want our friendship
and support.

There were times when she was scheduled to talk to her doctors that she
specifically requested that I not be present.

She told me she didn't want me to hear what they said.
I can only assume that she felt ashamed.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'll be as nice as the company allows me.

kilikini's widower has turned the cats out. I'm so very, very
sorry! for having requested your help in setting up a vet care
fund for her cats. I know this is absolutely not what Christy
would have wanted but he's turned put them outside. To be honest
I'm not even sure he still bothers to feed them. Dammit!

Jill

This make me SO ANGRY!

I remember vividly how hard Christy worked to save Miss Pua, when
she almost died of starvation.

And how long it took her to clear up the ringworm: months!

And how Christy said that Miss Pua was always her 'special' cat,
because of their bond. And of course, Miss Pua was so grateful for
being saved.

and now this rat ******* has PUT THESE BEAUTIFUL CATS OUTDOORS.

HE'S TOO LAZY TO EVEN TAKE THEM TO A SHELTER??!!!

Some people are nothing but oxygen thieves.

*Must try to calm down* Blood pressure WAY TOO HIGH!!!

Nice way to honor the memory of your wife, you poor excuse for a
human being.

There is a special place in hell waiting for you.

Whoa!! He hasn't abandoned them. From what I've read, the male is
still an indoor cat, and the 2 females are now outdoor cats which
they enjoy. They are still being fed. I'm not defending him, nor do
I like them being outside and getting fleas, etc., but some facts
are being misread. Bobble

Very much so. Thank you.

TFM®

I'm glad things aren't the way they first appeared.

Appeared where?

If her family member WANT the cats, maybe we can do a collection to
send
them there? We've done it before.... We can do it again (remember
that ol' WWII mantra?)

If he wants to keep Tyrone, as an INDOOR cat, he can do so with the
stipulation that they get regular veterinary visits, plus any medical
treatment, he can, but he should be put on notice that Kili's friends
are WATCHING HIM - and some are not so far away... insert evil grin
All three can be spirited away to someone who will care for them, and
a stick shoved up his butt if he doth protest too much

Nobody in her family wants the cats.

Now catch this part - I'm a 42 year old, fully grown man. I can and
will do whatever I want. I am not abusing the cats.

TFM®

I apologize, Alan. I just tend to overreact when it comes to outdoor
cats. Yours isn't exactly a great neighborhood where people are known
for their charitable acts towards cats, as your own wife told me. But
you're right, it's not my business. I do hope they at least got their
shots from that vet fund. Being outdoor cats might be fun for them but
it's not great, health-wise.

Jill

I think many of us do overreact, Jill, but it's out of caring. I know I
was thinking of my own cats in this situation if it comes up while I have
them all and have to leave them to someone else, and Julie did make a
good point that I won't know or have a say after I'm gone. Sorry for the
run-on sentence. I just like to think that someone's dying wishes are
honored only because I'd want mine to be. Allan, I apologize too.

I am just looking at you and shaking my head. Sweet Jesus on toast.

Why?? I feel bad for him even if he's not doing right by Christy but
questioning him isn't going to get anywhere. My thoughts go to Christy's
cats and my cats if I die and someone disrespected me by not caring for them
as I do. And I do apologize for jumping on this thread with only emotion.
I can't keep up with the threads on rec.food.cooking; moves too fast for me.

Having watched the two youtube videos,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFURD5dp_QU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QCHIZQmiOY

all *I* see is two cats who seem to be enjoying the outside, and male
voice that seems to hold them in some affection.

Since when was it a crime to let cats outside? When was calling a cat
'Retard' considered abuse?

I know that two youtube videos is hardly the 'whole story' but there is
nothing in those videos to suggest that the owner of those cats is in any
way abusing or neglecting them. They look like healthy happy cats that
have a good relationship with the person behind the camera to me.

If folks have any concrete evidence that Alan is abusing and/or
neglecting the cats, then it needs to be reported to the authorities, not
posted about here. Despite personal opinions of him and his character,
posting to a public newsgroup implying he is an animal abuser is
innapropriate at best and libellious at worst.

Yowie

Thank you. I know I should have snipped this, but it bears repeating.
There is NO PROOF that Alan is harming those cats in any way. I met Alan
last year, when he knew that there was a limited time left for Christy,
and that person would NEVER harm her beloved friends. Please either find
proof and contact the authorities or stop maligning a person's reputation.
In other words, either put up or shut up.

Once again, thank you.

I have nothing but love for those little critters who own me (or at least
think they do)

What she was and what you were to each other was evident to me after
watching one video. No one NO ONE can even imagine what the last months
(years?) have been to you. I have no idea what set Jill off but she has
not had the best of time the last year either. Her post did not match what
I saw; I tried to say so but sometimes people get lost.

I would hate to have to answer for all the times I told one of my cats they
were retarded.

LOL. I call my cats "weirdo", "scaredy-cat", "demanding prima donna"
and other choice names, as the situation and cat requires. Cats are
surprisingly thick-skinned about such name-calling.

OK, who can guess which of the above quoted epithets was leveled at
which of my cats?

As it is, she did too little too late.

She was my best friend and my soul mate.
Whether she drank too much doesn't matter. She was the sweetest, kindest

smile and a kind word.

And yet here you are telling us her most private things. I don't get you.
If you're angry with her for speeding up her death, I think you need to go
talk with someone, face to face, like a therapist or support group. Then
again, maybe this is how you're dealing with her death. I sure know I was
angry with everyone and everything after my son died. I will just stop
reading the Christy posts for my own peace of mind. I hope you will too.
I'm also going to have to stop thinking about her cats because I can't do
anything about that either.

In my mourning I tend to forget that others have suffered losses as well.
For that I apologize.

I know Jill suffered a heavy loss with her Mother's passing.
