Amelia and Harri weigh in on the weather
Winter has arrived a little early in central Iowa this year. We don't
usually get single digit (Fahrenheit) temps until January or so, but when I left the house at 7:00 this morning the outside air temp was 9. I still open up the doors for the kitties to go play in the yard, but nobody stays outside long. Harri makes sure to let me know that the weather is not acceptable and it's my job to fix it. She goes outside for 30 minutes or so and makes sure to get her paws icy cold, then she runs into the house and leaps directly into my lap. She then walks up onto my chest and plants those icy paws right on me to warm them up and remind me that it's time to turn the outdoor thermostat up. I keep telling her that I can't but she doesn't believe me. Amelia will stand just inside the kitchen door looking out, then will turn and look at me, then look outside, then look at me, etc. Like she's saying "It's too cold, make it warmer!". When her staring at me for 5 minutes or so doesn't work she does go outside for a few minutes, then comes back inside and sits directly in front of me, staring with a very accusing look. "You let me go outside and get COLD! That's MEAN!". She will stare for a few minutes then stalk off in a huff. This promises to be a long, cold winter. Help! Dan |

Fugazi and Isis (both RB) used to glare at us when it got hot, being indoor only they figured that when it was cold we turned on the warm thing and lo and behold it was warm! But now why didn't we turn the warm thing off? Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs |

Amelia and Harri weigh in on the weather
O T hasn't seen snow yet this year but, hates the cold. He is hoping that
Harri might want to spend some of the winter in a warm place. Piglet won't even go out to investigate on the porch. Willow gets too cold so wouldn't let out even if she wanted. Sadie dog is Willows heating pad!!! "Dan M" wrote in message ... Winter has arrived a little early in central Iowa this year. Dan We're nowhere near that cold but the masters are complaining all the same. Lucy is marching back and forth in front of me as I type demanding the fireplace be turned on. Tiger is somewhere on the bed under all the covers and ain't commin' out till spring! I just love your word-pictures, Dan. Thanks! --Kim |

Dan You just need the famous 'Doorway Into Summer'. Robert A. Heinlein, a famous Science Fiction writer (and lover of cats) named one of his books "The Doorway Into Summer". He was living in a house with many doors, and when the cold weather came, his cat would demand that he open each door; the cat was sure one door would lead to Summer. Kenzie has been begging to go out into the front porch, but she meows to come back in in less than five minutes. Then, when she has warmed up (10 or 15 minutes, maybe) she begs at the door, again. This goes on for as long as I'm willing to put up with it. I wish I could heat the porch for her, but it's all windows on three sides. They are old, and they leak cold air pretty badly. I hate to think what it would cost to try to heat it. Poor Kenzie: she asks for so little from me ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ^..^ "Life without cats would be only marginally worth living." -TC, and the unmercifully, relentlessly, sweet calico kitty, Kenzie. Every day is a treasure with Kenzie; I try to treat them that way. There will only be so many, and then there will never, ever, be any more. How you behave towards cats here below determines your status in Heaven. - Robert Heinlein |

In fact, after trying each of the house doors in turn, and finding that all of them led out into bad weather, the cat would sometimes ask to be let out through a closet door, then look disappointed when that door didn't lead into good weather either. She would finally, reluctantly, go out into the cold and/or wet weather, then meow for several minutes once she came back inside, as if reporting on how bad conditions were outdoors. -- John F. I must have gone soft, with the warm winters we've had of late. I used to be quite alright with -20 - -30C (-4 - -22F), but now I shudder at the thought of one of those cold winters again. -- Marina, Miranda and Caliban. In loving memory of Frank and Nikki. |

When I was young and lived at home, we had a cat named Thompson (a girlcat) who would do this. If she didn't like the weather at the front door, she would run to the back door and demand to be let out there. 'If' the weather didn't please her there, either, she would go to the kitchen window and demand to be let out there. And if she didn't like the weather there, she would make one last try at the sauna door. None of my family had read or heard of the book at that time, but we always said Thompson was looking for a door into sunshine. -- Marina, Miranda and Caliban. In loving memory of Frank and Nikki. |
