(OT) Anyone like this house?
It's a Victorian "cottage" in the town where John lives. I'm musing about
possibly buying the place. http://nwa.mlxchange.com/DotNet/Pub/...27&s=NWA&t=NWA Click on the photo of the house in the link to see more photos or to view the slideshow. Of course I'd have to sell my house first. (I'm working on that.) I'm just poking around to see what's available and this came up. What charm! I love the stained glass windows and the wonderful front porch. The master bedroom is downstairs with a full bath with a clawfoot tub. Oooh! I'd have a problem with the "stove" in the kitchen. It looks like a wood burning stove. I'm entranced by history and old homes but I'm not willing to compromise that much Jill |

It looks as though it could be a bit claustrophobic, but maybe that wouldn't bother you. Also, with that bathtub, you wouldn't have a real shower. That might or might not be a drawback for you. I used to prefer baths over showers, until it got too hard to climb out of the tub. Now I'd love to have a long soak occasionally, but I'd need help to get out, so I settle for my shower. As for the stove, you could no doubt replace it. Joy |

The master bedroom & bath are on the main floor, which is important to me. I do realize I'm not going to be able to climb stairs when/if I'm 80. with that bathtub, you wouldn't have a real shower. That might or might not be a drawback for you. I used to prefer baths over showers, until it got too hard to climb out of the tub. Now I'd love to have a long soak occasionally, but I'd need help to get out, so I settle for my shower. I already have a handle on my bathtub to help me get in and out. I also have a shower nozzle so that "telephone" style in the pretty claw-foot tub wouldn't be much of a problem. As for the stove, you could no doubt replace it. Joy LOL! I heard back from the realtor... that stove is electric! It's a reproduction of a 1900 era cast iron stove. Okay, that's cool. I also don't mind the stenciling on some of the walls. That was very common in that era and is very decorative. But again, this is a pipe dream. I *am* going to move. I don't know where. Jill Jill |

I live in a senior retirement residence, and we have a couple of residents over 100 who are still climbing stairs quite often. (Although there ARE elevators for those who prefer not.) |

That is an expensive stove, made in Rogers, Arkansas, by House of Webster. Cute house. If you buy it the whole world will know where you live. Bud |

possibly buying the place. http://nwa.mlxchange.com/DotNet/Pub/...27&s=NWA&t=NWA Looks wonderful but is there any public transport to the nearest town? I'd rather live in a freight container with a bus service than a palace where I'd be stuck forever. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |

From that house I could walk to town. Not that there is anything much in town. Tourist shops, mostly. I'd still have to drive to the grocery store... sorry! Public transportation may work well in the UK and even in large US cities. But it doesn't work all over the US. This is a very big country. Right now I have to drive 20 miles to get to a grocery store. I can't stand outside my house and catch a bus or a tram. It doesn't work that way. I'd have to worry about that eventually even if I stay right where I am. I don't have an answer to that question. Jill |

I had Springfield in mind - that's about 40 miles away. Sooner or later *everybody* gets too disabled to drive. What happens to you then? It's not an individual issue, it's societal. We just don't prioritize public transportation. So then it's lousy (unreliable, too infrequent, doesn't cover the area comprehensively, and in some cases, dirty and dangerous), and then people prefer not to ride it. Of course, a lot of people don't have a choice - they can't afford a car, so they have to put up with an underfunded system. However, a lot of disabled people can't even ride public transportation. They rely on paratransit, which provides door-to-door rides for a minimal fare. It's not very flexible, but at least it's a way to get around. A lot of places that don't have buses or subways still have paratransit - my mom lived in a part of Florida that had no bus service, and she got around with paratransit. In places like that, the people might well have been able to get around on mass transit, but there isn't any. -- Joyce Hi, this is the Sylvia stress reduction hotline.
