(OT) Mozilla Firefox Advice
I mentioned I had to replace my PC. Now I'm trying to install Mozilla
Firefox (browser). I cannot figure out how to install this without it asking me to d/l all this other add-on stuff I don't want. I'll keep looking around but if anyone has a quick link to just your basic Firefox installation, I'd appreciate it. Jill |

I don't recall such prompting - can you cite one or two of the items it suggests you install??? I certianly install AdBlock Plus and FlashBlock when I install Firefox, but that's my own choice. Hearing a couple of specifics might give me some insight on your installation's behavior. Art |

Jill I have sort of the same problem - I've been using Firefox in an older version, but suddenly it INSISTS upon offering me the newer version, and I must quickly click on "no thanks, I'll risk it" before the download starts. (If I don't, I must reinstall the "exec" option of the older version, which is fortunately still on my computer.) It's a real PITA, and I'm not sure what else I can do about it. |

version, but suddenly it INSISTS upon offering me the newer versio I'm curious why you wouldn't want the newer version Because they keep offering versions that don't run on my system (MacOS Tiger - any Version 3 of Firefox works, Version 4 doesn't). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |

Maybe the new version has had a feature I use a lot removed (this has happened, I don't know if it was with Firefox, but definitely with other programs). And if someone has an older computer with insufficient memory to run a new version, but doesn't have the money to buy another computer *or* memory, then they *can't* update. This happened to me with iTunes during a period when I was unemployed and fairly broke. I got a notice to upgrade iTunes, so I said yes. Then it told me I didn't have enough memory to run the new version, so I couldn't install it. (Or else maybe I did install it and it wouldn't run properly - this was a number of years ago.) So after that, I declined all offers to upgrade, until finally I couldn't access the iTunes store unless I had a newer version. So I bought mp3s from Amazon for a while, until I got a job and could buy another computer. but if you go to Tools / Options, go to the Advanced tab, and select the third tab "Update", there's a radio button to select various update options. You'd check the bottommost button, "Never check for updates". Does this work as well as the "Don't show this message again" checkbox that's on the dialog box asking you to update Java, or whatever? I always check that box when declining, but it still keeps on asking. -- Joyce - Mommy loves you too my sweaty litter baby fire - Ummm what mom? - MY SWEET LITTLE BABY GIRL!! sorry honey! -- damnyouautocorrect.com |

Does this work as well as the "Don't show this message again" checkbox that's on the dialog box asking you to update Java, or whatever? I always check that box when declining, but it still keeps on asking. Sometimes that's impossible to eliminate. It seems to me that the last time I updated (and it IS a good thing - Java gets lots of hacking abuse) it offered me the opportunity to turn off future updates. I also have a freeware program that alerts me whenever something tries to install itself for running every time, and of course I forbade jusched (the java update scheduler) from running, not to mention that obnoxious Apple QTTask (or whatever it is) that is constantly checking for updates to rarely-used Quick Time. Ditto for Adobe updater. (The program is called Mike Lin's Startup Monitor.) There's supposed to be an update tab on the java console (reachable from Control Panel, if not in your tray) but I certainly don't have it, perhaps because of the other stuff I'd done. I haven't seen a Java update prompt in quite a while. Art |
