Catching up
I would recommend that any high school student who is serious about
getting an education drop out as soon as legally permissible, take the GED, and go straight into college. I dropped out in tenth grade and joined the Navy when I was seventeen. When I got out, still age seventeen, I took the GED and went to college. Know what? I didn't start getting new material until I was a junior. The first two years I did in one, and I tested out of over half my courses because it was the same stuff I'd had back in junior high. Perhaps I should explain why I was in the military such a short time. Originally I went in to get into UDT (Underwater Demolitions Team), today known as the SEALS, which had a height limit of 6'1". I was 6'1" when I went in, and within three months I had grown to 6'4". When they told me I was disqualified for UDT, I opted out. And its true - almost all that stuff they forced me to learn meant diddly squat in my adult life. Yowie -- Women should be obscene but not heard. My wife comes with instructions--lots of instructions. I saw a woman wearing a sweatshirt with "Guess" on it., so I said "Thyroid problem?'" You know "that look" women get when they want sex? Me neither. |

... Nope, I wouldn't go back to 17 if you paid me. I think I'd go back as far as about 27, then skip the years between 26 and 11, and enjoy my childhood again. Teenage years (and my early adult hood) weren't an easy ride, I don't think I could stand going through it all again. I'm much more content, grounded and *confident* than I ever was back then. Although I'd take my 21 year old body back any time :-) Yowie Reading this makes me feel less weird. I get the impression sometimes that I'm the only one who doesn't wax nostalgic for ttheir teens or 20's. I never have. Those years were too hard, for a number of reasons. DH & I were babies ourselves when we got married and were poor as church mice. Give me emotional stability, security that a 30-year marriage brings, wisdom that comes only with age, and financial security (well sorta) over a 21-year-old body any day. But wouldn't it be nice if we could have it all? I was with a complete dropkick between 15 and 27, which is why I wouldn't go back to that period. But it doesn't stop me from buying every single CD I can get my hands on from that period. My collection of cheesy 80's CDs is getting scarey. My excuse is that I would have bought these when they were actually popular (and on vinyl) if I'd had the money back then, but since I have the money now, I'm just making up for lost time. I think my most modern music dates back to 1991 :-) Yowie, 80's music junkie |

"Yowie" wrote Amd yes, my favourite type is plinky plonky synth-pop, of which the ultimate example is IMHO the song Tainted Love, by Soft Cell (remember that back in te 80's Australian Music was far more influenced by English music than American, and Soft Cell were English) Hey, Yowie, (dare I admit this?) I have that Soft Cell album on vinyl. Not into vinyl, are you? ;o) -- Marina |

writes Geez. Guess some of my faves from INXS (RIP M.Hutchins!) are not "plinky-plonky".... Oooh no. I'm thinking Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Howard Jones ..... Finally got to see Soft Cell live a couple of years back - WOW. Gig of the year, as far as I was concerned. And INXS? Definitely not plinky-plonky synthpop. And "Kick" era Michael Hutchence fell into his own category ..... sorry, I need to go for a little lie-down here! -- Cathi |

The one Album I wold give my eye teeth for at the moment is the first album from Real Life (yes, thats the band's name) and the album had two big hits, "Catch me I'm falling" and "Send me an Angel". Heck, if I could get those two songs on a set of compilation albums, I'd be happy I have Send Me an Angel on a compilation - Richard Blade's Flashback Favorites, Volume 5. And it's not the 1989 version, but is the original from '83 or '84. (Can't help with the other song, though - sorry!) You might try a Google search for the Flashback Favorites series. I've seen them around in different stores around here, so they're not obscure, at least not in the USA. Other songs on Volume 5: Pete Shelley - Telephone Operator Tommy Tutone - 867-5309/Jenny (loved this song!) Men at Work - Overkill (another great one) Bangles - Hero Takes a Fall (good one) Psychedelic Furs - The Ghost in You Bill Nelson - Acceleration (remix) The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away (like this one, too) Polecats - Make a Circuit With Me (club mix) Joboxers - Just Got Lucky Bad Manners - Samson and Delilah Wide Boy Awake - Chicken Outlaw I have to say I've never heard of some of them (Bill Nelson? Wide Boy Awake??) but I'm happy there's more than one or two good ones on it. Joyce |

My late teenage years and the early part of my 20's were quite possibly the most miserable of my life. As you say, I would like the 21 year old body however!
