I thought it was a lovely touch, having Piglet join Ralph & Kissa at
the table this year.

Little Kitty's mural/frieze was a nice touch too.

I haven't started using a newsreader yet, but using the Google daily
digest is a royal pain, so maybe I should. I expect things to settle
down midweek and I can install the one Cory recommended.

Julie

My opinion (anyone else's opinion
is welcome!) is that the biggest reason that Usenet activity has been
going down is the increasing popularity of web-based message boards. I
think Usenet is seen as a bit "geeky" or too technical. It also
requires learning how to use a newsreader. Also seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September.

Default Questionz

Guess I better say hello too. To everybody. We started meowing 10 years ago,
in 1997. For a while we were an active part of the rpcc community, but as so
often happens real life got in the way.

The ones who meowed (and those who sometimes woofed) have gone to the Bridge
now, except for Byron who was a mere kitten in 1997. Arvid, the grumpy blue
kitty went and Thuse, the Elkhound who loved kitties. Two years ago Birte,
also a kitty lover and our angel Elkie went much too early after a nasty
illness. And last year the BIG black SHY cat Duncan became too tired,
followed by our icon and the most talkative of the bunch, our wise Pandai.
One day we will meet again...

Only Byron remembers and Runa (the surviving Elkie) knows a little too.
About how this community was a haven of warmth and support. Many a
friendship was made through rpcc. Everybody who meant well was always
welcome and so it should always be. There is so much sorrow and pain in this
world that it is good to find a place where one can be whatever one wants to
be. Where kitties rule and meow, but hoomins are always welcome too. As are
d*ggies and other critters. I sincerely hope rpcc will always stay that way,
whether with "old-timers" or new(er) kitties and their families!

Be silly and forget life's difficulties for a moment. Who knows, maybe Byron
will talk his new brothers Ginger (who's 5 years old already, time flies!)
and Giovanni into being part of a new adventure one day. But even if that's
not to be, we will always purr for those who need purrs and Runa will send
her "Howls-frum-Howland" for as long as she can!

First of, hello to all the old friends here and also to the new ones.
My first ever online experience was r.p.c. Shadrach 'meowed', Newton
answered and the rest is history.

Speaking on a personal note, I have not been back to r.p.c.c. on a
regular basis for several years. My kitties show up for the Ball but
life intervenes and I have enough to do just keeping up with email,
let alone the volume of posts the newsgroup would spawn. I also found
that buying a house takes up what little free time one might have. I
have missed r.p.c.c but have kept up with most of the "old-timers" via
email. That's rather sad. Many of us invested a lot of time, effort
and even tears trying to get the group *we* wanted instead of the one
the PTB and some non-meowers thought we should be happy with. I think
in my case it was just such an emotional investment that I was totally
spent when it finally happened and it had the effect of taking a lot
of the fun out of it for me.

That was not fair to the group or to the other members who have
remained faithful posters and I apologize. Shadrach & Jezebel are
waiting for me at the Bridge, but Jessica & Ezekiel are currently
making my life interesting and I think could probably wreak some havoc
around here.

Radonna, aka mb, and the fuzzmonsters

My personal favorite among the suggested names was "clowder", but a
high poohbah news.groupie vetoed it because he didn't know what it
meant. Since a split was inevitable by that point (many meowers
really didn't want the split at all), "community" was the best
compromise arrived at and approved.

And that's the Cliff Notes version of how we got here. :-)

Default Questionz

This thread brings tears to my eyes - good tears at seeing so many old
friends back, and tears that new friends are so eager to learn and
carry on the traditions of rpcc. And a few tears of frustration at
the thought that unfeeling things are still being said behind the
scenes. Hisspitt!

I started posting after the split, so didn't get burned in the flame
wars, but I certainly was very aware of what had gone on.

Why did we stop posting? It wasn't a conscious decision, certainly,
but life seemed to start intruding more and more. I don't really have
time to post from work, and I use my computer less and less at home
(again, life intrudes). Certainly the loss of 4 of my 7 furkids over
the years (3 in the last 4 years) contributed to a loss of heart for a
time. Even when I come back, I find my good intentions to continue to
post going by the wayside - witness the fact that I didn't even get
the tribute to Baby in for the Jellicle Ball.

Add to that the fact that so many who were active at the time my cats
started posting are gone, for one reason or another, and it was easier
to drift off. I still love to read from time to time, and always hold
out the hope that we can come back and start posting again, but time
will tell.

nod to the Rainbow Bridge Kitties from the Howse of Koster: Munchkin,
