I think I'm committed - or I should be!
And it's all my sister's fault! As some of you know, I have not wanted to
get another cat right away after losing Nanki-Poo last June. However, I always knew I would someday, since I really think two cats are better than one. Then, in November, Lindy was diagnosed with cancer. The baby vet who first diagnosed her said she "might have 30 days". I decided it would be fair to burden an old, sick cat with invaders, so I would wait until she was gone, and then try to find two cats that are used to being together. As far as I can tell, Lindy is in just about the same condition as she was when she was first diagnosed. My experienced vet and a radiologist confirmed that she does have cancer, but it seems to be progressing slowly. Yesterday I saw her jump on top of a 5-foot block wall. Today I had to go to the vet to pick up some more of her medicine. There was a notice in the office from a woman who was looking for a home for two cats, a brother and sister, 2 1/2 years old. Her description of their training and behavior sounds ideal. The receptionist noticed my interest in the notice and made me a copy, which I brought home so I could think it over. I mentioned that Lindy might not like the intrusion of two new cats, and the receptionist said it might be just what she needs. Shortly after I got home, my sister called. She is a dog person and always has been. She recently learned that this was because she had never really known a cat. She now does volunteer work at her local (no-kill) shelter and fell in love with the cats they have. Anyway, I told her about the notice, figuring she'd talk me out of doing anything about it. Instead, she said, "Go for it!" I called the number and left a message on the answering machine. I had planned to send the cat information to my kids, and maybe post it on one of my newsgroups, and wait for people to talk me out of it. Instead, she told me to go ahead. ;-) The woman with the cats called later. She is giving them up because she isn't a cat person. They belonged to her ex-fiancé when he moved in with her. When he moved out, he left the cats. They deserve a good home, with somebody who wants them! She said they are very sweet, and even her mother, who not only isn't a cat person but is allergic to cats, likes them. They're going to cost me. She says they're spayed & neutered, but doesn't think they've had any shots or flea treatments since they were kittens. They've been mostly indoor, but sometimes allowed to go out on her balcony. They use a litter box. They eat all dry food. She's going to give me a bunch of stuff to go with them. Since I'm so close, I'm going over there "to see them" Sunday afternoon. I figure my chances of coming home without them are about equal to my chances of winning the lottery, and I haven't bought a lottery ticket in years. Aside from the obvious, there are two good things about this. There is at least a chance that having other cats around might encourage Lindy to eat more so they can't get it. And, if there are any problems, I can blame them on my sister. ;-) -- Joy There is something about the presence of a cat... that seems to take the bite out of being alone. - Louis J. Camuti |

Could you talk to her about an arrangement whereby if Lindy just ends up totally miserable with these cats, she would take them back? I don't think it's entirely out of line to offer congratulations. -- Joyce ^..^ (To email me, remove the X's from my user name.) |

Lindy has adjusted to two other additions in the past. She wasn't thrilled either time, but she did adjust. I'll accept those congratulations. Thank you. Joy |
