Remnants of Ike (long and OT, sorta)
Sunday, the remnants of Ike blew through Indiana - literally! Winds up
to 50 MPH! Over 200,000 people (in southern Indiana) without power, and it wasn't the usual entire neighborhoods - it was a few people here, a few people there... Our power went out Sunday at 3:00PM Eastern time. Our next door neighbor still had power, but our neighbor across the street did not. The addition behind us had power, and the rest of the street we live on did also. As a side note, we went to our favorite (locally and independently owned) pet supply store on Tuesday evening (cats (and dog) gotta eat, electricity or not), and they were open, with a generator going to run their cash register & credit card machine, and that was it. Rest of the store was dark, and people were finding their pet supplies by rote (they rarely 'mix things up' to confuse the customers, unless they get a new product and need to make room), or by flashlight. High school that they sit next to had power, and so did the bank across the street. Go figure... Unfortunately, about 1/2 the power company's linemen had been sent to Texas to (as part of Indiana Task Force One), to help with restoring power to those areas devastated by Ike, so they were shorthanded, and crews and equipment had to be brought in from elsewhere. It wasn't until 6 or 7PM Monday evening that two inspectors from the power company came by to see where the problem was: The main line after our next door neighbor's feed was down (almost taking a streetlight with it), and that was our and our across-the-street neighbor's feed. They said there would be a crew out *MAYBE* on Tuesday, but more likely Thursday...or Saturday... Cold showers in the AM are so much fun - NOT. This made me feel for those without power for weeks................. When the power went out I had a load of laundry in the washer, and one in the dryer. Fortunately, the washer was full of water (it hadn't drained or spinned yet), but the dryer had towels... half dry. Finally, the power came back on at 12:01am this morning. How do I know the exact time? Because the ceiling light in the bedroom had been left on, and it woke me with a blinding glare! Now I know how all the vampires in the ol’ movies felt! Now being fully awake, I ran around the house turning off all the lights that had been left on, set the washer to drain only (rewashed the clothes that were in them this morning, and am rewashing the towels that were in the dryer now), and went back to bed.... and will eventually get around to resetting the clocks that need it.... -- ^..^ This is Kitty.
