A pork belly-topped cheeseburger, a sandwich stuffed with mozzarella
sticks, and a 1,540-calorie slice of cheesecake were among the dishes
that a health advocacy group singled out on Tuesday for over-the-top fat
and sodium content.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest unveiled the group of
"honorees," including Denny's Corp, Cheesecake Factory Inc, Kahala
Corp's Cold Stone Creamery, and DineEquity Inc's Applebee's and IHOP.
According to the group, the typical person should limit calorie intake
to 2,000 a day, as well as keep saturated fat below 20 grams (0.7 ounce)
and sodium below 1,500 milligrams.

Each serving of the award-winning menu items nearly reaches, or even
surpasses, these restrictions.

The dishes are mostly twists on the usual suspects of burgers, dessert
and all things fried. Denny's "Fried Cheese Melt," for instance, is a
grilled cheese sandwich with four fried mozzarella sticks inside. The
entree amounts to 1,260 calories and 21 grams of saturated fat, not to
mention 3,010 milligrams of sodium.

Applebee's "Provolone Stuffed Meatballs with Fettuccine" adds up to
1,520 calories and 43 grams of saturated fat. The Cheesecake Factory's
"Ultimate Red Velvet Cheesecake" goes beyond the usual by alternating
two pieces of red velvet cake with two pieces of cheesecake, racking up
to 1,540 calories and 59 grams of saturated fat. And Cold Stone
Creamery's "PB&C Shake" (peanut butter & chocolate) has 2,010 calories
and 68 grams of saturated fat.

Two out of three Americans are overweight, and such dishes increase
their risk of obesity, diabetes, heart attacks and cancer, according to
Bonnie Liebman, the center's director of nutrition. Denny's and
Applebee's both said they offered a wide variety of choices. Denny's
pointed to its "Fit Fare" menu, and Applebee's to its "Unbelievably
Great Tasting and Under 550 Calories" options.

Other restaurants did not respond to requests for a comment. People
often see dining out as an indulgence and a time when they do not pay
much attention to their diets.

The U.S. government is trying to push restaurants to disclose
nutritional information on their menus. The Food and Drug Administration
plans to issue rules requiring restaurants to list nutritional and
caloric information by the end of 2011.

If something is bad for me, I'm pretty sure to like it.

Ice cream, yes. And keep it coming. ALas, no, don't. I either have
lots of discipline, or none at all. I can't have ice cream in my
freezer, because it really doesn't stay in my freezer. But I can't
always avoid the temptation of an ice cream cone when I'm out and
about on a hot day. I figure at least that way, I do have some built-
in portion control.

I can leave candy alone aside from the occasional smidgeon of good
quality chocolate, but baked goods, never!

Potatoes particularly if they're fried or deep fried, and come to the
table hot, salty and crisp.

Sorry, leafy green vegetables, I know you're good for me. I just find
you eminently un-craveable.

Oddly, when I was pregnant, green leafy vegetables was *exactly* what I
craved. The greener the better! My favourite was 'steamed vegetable'
from the local noodle house, which is actually Chinese broccoli stems &
leaves, lightly steamed, and served with oyster sauce. But anything
green was good!

All my old favourites, especially fried food, made me want to puke. No
coffee, no tea, no wine or any sort of alcohol. Greasy stuff tasted
putrid, anything with a lot of extra sugar tasted burnt. I ate a whole
heap of salad when I was pregnant, and put on no weight at all! In the
last month, my cravings switched over to dairy products, but still the
thought of very sweet or greasy was still nauseating - home made custard
(the cornflour variety, not the egg variety) as well as natural yoghurt
with a hint of honey, as well as just plain milk, were very popular, but
icecream was out because it was too sweet.

Once the Yowlet was out and I had full deflated, I'd lost about 10kg!

Alas, in the intervening 7years, that 10kg has re-found me, as well as
quite a few of its friends.

I'm trying to get back down to pre-baby weight. Even better if I get
back to just-post-baby weight! And better again if I rewind back to when
I met Joel - I was just plump enough to have curves, but I didn't
consider myself particularly 'overweight'. Unlike now.

(then again, back when I met Joel, I didn't have a car and walked & got
public transport everywhere - and lived pretty much in the centre of
town so that was an entirely viable way to get around. Now I live in the
'burbs' where it takes me 22 minutes to drive to work, but would take
over 2 hours to get there via walking & public transport.)

We don't like either Denny's (except breakfast) or Applebees, but I'm
sure the restaurants we DO like are
equally as bad.

My weakness is also ice cream. *I have been very
bad lately and my current favorite is "Monkeying Around" flavor from
Schwann. It's described as
banana flavored full fat ice cream, with bits of fudge-coated real
banana and a streak of graham
cracker running through it. Yum. Last week's favorite was fat-free
vanilla with Braum's fat-free
hot fudge sauce.

I loathe Denny's myself; Louie and I prefer the local joints, which
are far more interesting. My guilt food is dark orange chocolate ice
cream. Only one place in the area to my knowledge makes it, and
they're a bit of a drive, so I do not frequently indulge.

My guiltier indulgence, as many of you probably know about me anyway,
is premium perfume and make-up, and the local Sephora and Ulta are
closer to me than the artisan ice cream shop. To Louie's abiding
chagrin. My rationale is that flavored lipstick helped me quit
smoking, and now that I'm not spending a colossal sum of money on
cancer-sticks I can put it to better luxuries.

Blessed be,
Baha

Anyone who has ever quit probably understands that anything that
works is okay, when
it comes to smoking ceasing for good. What worked for me was Lemon
Heads hard candy
and bottled nuts (not peanuts, more expensive nuts like cashews and
almonds). And when
I quit, my only reason was that ciggies were $5 a carton and I thought
spending $40 a month
on clothes would be more fun than blowing $40 up in smoke! They had
only one aid to quit
back in '84, and that was that awful gum. Better aids today but some
of those drugs sound
dangerous to me.
I would never be able to live here if handn't quit when I did. If you
ever smoked you know it
at 6424 feet altitude (it's only a mile at the state capitol steps:
big sign, tourists taking pics).
I am interested in what brands flavored lipstick you favor from Ulta
and Sephora.

Tabloids. I don't buy them new and up-to-the-minute, have sources for
fairly recent issues. Not because I
either idolize celebs or are vitally interested in any of their
shenanigans, but because I enjoy laughing
at strangers and this is a way to do that violence-free, LOL. Even if
only part of what they print is true,
people with money to do whatever they want whenever wherever and
however have no more smarts
than the majority....us.

I quit in 2000 and while the patch was available, it was very
expensive. Now you can get them free from Albany. Neither of my
stores of chooice had anything flavored (Now my favorite flavored
premium gloss is from Urban Decay, and I buy the ones from Bath and
Body Works in bulk.) In 2000 I used either Bonne Bell Lip Smackers,
or a Jane lipstick--I think it was called Mega Bites and has been long
discontinued. To this day I keep a tube of Bath and Body Works lip
gloss in my purse and on my desk, because the craving never really
leaves.

Blessed be,
Baha
