Default OT - Brooke Update 3-11

Monday, March 9, 2009 Brooke had a doctor's appointment for 8:30 and a CAT
scan scheduled at 3:30 pm. In order to do the CAT scan she couldn't eat
anything since 12 midnight. When we got to the hospital they took her in
right away. The nurse took her vitals. Brooke told the nurse she had a CAT
scan scheduled for 3:30 and didn't think she could wait till 3:30 to eat. So
the nurse called down to see if they had any earlier openings. About 20
minutes later the nurse told us we can go on over and have her CAT scan done
early. The CAT scan took about 15 minutes, so back to the clinic we went and
waited until about 1:00 pm. At that point the nurse comes in and said the
CAT scan only caught the mass by her heart. We needed to go back to have
another CAT scan done so it can catch the mass in her neck. Good thing we
didn't eat right after he first CAT scan! So back over we went for another
CAT scan, 15 minutes later and we were headed back. We stopped by the
cafeteria and bought lunch. Hospital food... Yuck! Especially, being used to
our families' cooking. So about 1:30 we get back to the clinic and did some
more waiting (another two hours went by)! Finally Dr. Gardner came in and
boy was it worth the wait!!! She told us she got the results of the CAT
scan. The mass has shrunk by 50%!!! She gave Brooke an exam and left a few
minutes later. The nurse came in with her chemo about an hour later we
finally got to go home. Whoo Hoo the mass shrunk!!!

Brooke's next appointment is scheduled for March 16th with Dr. Gardner for
another exam. They are also supposed to inject her with the liquid for
another Gallium scan.

March 17th she has another PET scan scheduled. Then March 18th she has her
Gallium scan again. These two are used together to check her soft tissues
for hot spots. I guess they are running these tests to make sure nothing
else has popped up anywhere else. Initially these both came back negative.

So far Brooke lost about 90% of her hair. She says no pictures are allowed
at this point; still smiling in true Brooke fashion. Her spirit is intact;
she doesn't let anyone see that it affects her. She is handling her second
round of Chemo well with no side affects to speak of yet.

As if things aren't hectic enough, Raven has come down with the flu. Yep
fever, cough, sinus, and VERY contagious. So Maw-Maw and Paw-Paw are taking
care of Raven as a precaution. We simply can't put Brooke, and Raven in the
same house. Brooke's immune system will not be able to fight it off. Thanks
Mom and Dad Salazar!

Thanks for everyone's support,

Erin Salazar

Raven's flu sounds a lot like what I had, but I also threw up for a day or
so. I hope that Brooke doesn't catch it. Or anyone else for that matter.

I got a lovely thank you card from young Miss Brooke. I can't find the
envelope from it right now. I do have something for her. Can you email it
to me in case I can't find the envelope soon?

I've donated hair several times for them. All they need is hair 10 inches
or longer, cut by a professional stylist and preserved by them. Most
stylists in this area will do a free style if you donate. My first donation
was 14" long, the second was 10.5" long and the third was 7" long. The
third was an iffy donation, but we tried anyway.
