[OT] Husbands are strange
Its federal election night here and 3 of the 5 free-to-air TV channels are
not coincidentally, are showing election coverage. Of the two free to air channels not covering the election, the commercial channel, there's The Empire Strikes Back, and on the not-for-profit channel is showing their usual weird overseas stuff. So Joel decides he's going to watch Empire. Except that the channel Empire Strikes Back happens to be on has pretty lousy reception - you can still see the picture but it has snow and a 'ghost'. So Joel opens up our 'box set', gets out the Empire Strikes Back DVD that has sat there, untouched, for a good 5 years or so, and pops it into the DVD player so he can watch it "with a better picture". Whats worse is that he fiddled around with it until the DVD was in sync was with the free-to-air broadcast (missing the first 10 minutes fo th movie in the process) and is *pausing* the DVD in the ad-breaks so it stays in sync with the free to air transmission. I just want to know *why* after 5 years of not touching the thing, does he have to play it tonight, and I have no clue as to why it has to be in sync with the broadcast... And I thought Shmogg was strange... Yowie -- If you're paddling upstream in a canoe and a wheel falls off, how many pancakes can you fit in a doghouse? None, icecream doesn't have bones. |

But I think I can understand it. I own a number of old video tapes and some newer DVDs. Yet I'd rather watch something that's being broadcast on TV because then I'm doing something that other people are doing, at the same time. Maybe it's similar to why a lot of people still enjoy going to a movie theater, aside from the large screen. There's something enjoyable about a group experience, even if you don't know the other people. And even, apparently, if you can't *see* them, or know how many other there are, because they're in separate houses, and may or may not be watching along. You can still be sure that *some* people are watching along with you. I find a certain comfort in that - maybe Joel does, too. Joyce |

FORGET IT. "Yowie" wrote in message ... Its federal election night here and 3 of the 5 free-to-air TV channels are not coincidentally, are showing election coverage. You can still be sure that *some* people are watching along with you. I find a certain comfort in that - maybe Joel does, too. Joyce These days I hardly ever watch something as it's broadcast, too many time there's been something on I've been looking forward to only to be interupted by the phone or someone knocking at the door. Now I record everything I _want_ to watch on a hard disc recorder. On commercial channels I remove the adverts before watching. We're lucky in the UK to have the BBC, uninterupted programmes so if I'm watching something like Heroes I still record it but start playback after 2 seconds, that way I can pause it if I have to. -- For someone who worked with UNIVAC in the fifties and some of the most advanced computers in the world in the sixties and seventies, Charlie is adamantly anti technology. TIVO makes him crazy. But he makes an exception for being able to pause the TV for half and hour it what he's watching is interrupted. He can even manage to find and hit record for something he's watching if he has to leave for a while. His current favorite rant is for times I've scheduled two things to record at the same time. It interferes with his channel surfing. After all we have TIVO on two boxes. Its just I can't keep up with recording one program at 8pm next week on one box and another at 8pm next week on the other. We have all this great stuff to watch and mostly watch ancient black and white movies and old westerns. I love Ted Turner, or whoever at his outfit has got captioning on most all of the ancient stuff. Jo Jo |

I prescribe two Tylenol and about a quart of water. Of course that will just make you drunk again but then you'll feel better. Sounds like so much fun. Jo |

Yowie Silly question, but I'm just another mere female: If you have it on DVD with a good picture, why on earth would you even BOTHER to watch it on a broadcast channel with poor reception and commercials?????? |
