Victor I'm so glad to hear that Xoxo came through the surgery with no problems. I hope his recovery time is short. Aspirin is more toxic to cats than it is to humans. The really dangerous one is paracetamol (acetaminophen or Tylenol in the US). NEVER give that to a cat, in any dose. One human-sized dose is virtually certain death within hours. I actually switched back to ibuprofen for myself, at least in part because of that. I had switched to acetaminophen for a while because my stomach was acting up. After it felt better, though, I went back to ibu. Partly this is because the ibu just works better for the kind of pain I intermittently suffer - back pain, mostly. I don't have to take it all the time. But also, I really worried about accidentally dropping a Tylenol pill on the floor and being unable to find it - and then having one of my curious cats find it and eat it! :-0 -- Joyce ^..^ (To email me, remove the X's from my user name.) |

What kind of medication is given for cat pain? Ketoprofen, usually. Many human-safe painkillers will destroy a cat's liver or kidneys or cause metabolic acidosis. When TuTu needed pain relief (about 3 years ago), It was 1/4 of baby asprin every 3 days. Aspirin is more toxic to cats than it is to humans. The really dangerous one is paracetamol (acetaminophen or Tylenol in the US). NEVER give that to a cat, in any dose. One human-sized dose is virtually certain death within hours. Ketoprofen is only available through vets here. The moral being, don't try drug treatment for pain in cats on your own. Meloxicam is a much more potent anti-inflammatory/pain-reliever which we got for Muriel when she was dying of cancer. Sold as Metacam in the UK. It must be given after food or it'll ulcerate the stomach. It's not easy to get a seriously ill cat to eat so as to fit with the dosage schedule. ==== j a c k at c a m p i n . m e . u k === http://www.campin.me.uk ==== Jack Campin, 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland == mob 07800 739 557 CD-ROMs and free stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, and Mac logic fonts Thanks for the information. Victor Victor, I am late posting but wanted you to know we are all pulling for the beautiful kitty with the Valentine hugs-and-kisses name. (I know that's not accurate, but mention of Xoxo always reminds me of that). I'm glad to hear he's home. Purrs that the lump is completely benign and recovery is swift. Sherry |

Martinez Owned and operated by the Fantastic Seven (TM) Send your spam he Email me he Victor, I'm really glad Xoxo's prognosis looks positive! Hope he heals well and quickly from his incision. Looking at the other pain med comments on this thread I went and looked at what they gave Tucker post-surgery for pain because I had to give him little syringes also - It was something called Bupren and boy, was he sleepy and happy when he was on it!
