Default Feline Anemia, Hemobart

Hi there -

I posted a message a while back about my cat who had lost 3 pounds in
3 months, was not eating and borderline anemic. After about $600, a
lot of prednison and antibiotics, it looks like he is stablizing.

If anyone ever has this problem, please feel free to contact me about
it. I am happy to share what happened and help save your kitty and
wallet.

Why not share it here, so that others may benefit in the future?

And kudos to you for taking such good care of your kitty. I wish him a
speedy and complete recovery.

Well, sure, thanks!

Basically, we caught it early. I noticed him sleeping a lot more than
normal so we brought him in.

We did a full test on his levels, they were all over the board and the
only thing we noticed was an increased billarubin (sp) count and a
slightly low red blood cell count. So vet sent him home but after
three days I knew he was in bad shape. We tested FIV, FELV and the vet
was worried FIP but he had no swelling (abdomen xray) so we had that
on the bottom of the list. So all negative.

His RBC count had dropped to 23% and so I admitted him in the hospital
for one night. We hydrated him and fed him through the IV and
administered prednisone and an antibiotic and an appetite stimulant.
In this time, I also started giving him vitamins twice daily and
feeding him 5ML kitty formula with each prednisone dose, as well as
5ML of water to keep him hydrated.

His RBC spiked to 38% but after 10 days were were back to 27% and out
of antibitoics. Make sure your cat is getting the medicine. Mine
tricked me a lot and I found the pills on my clothes a few times after
I thought he ate it. Get a pill popper; they're awesome.

Vet increased prednisone and his RBC levels have climbed to 40 now and
seem to be stabilizing. He's still taking the vitamins but no more
formula. He's gained 2 pounds back and we've decreased the steroid and
hopefully will see a lower dose after the next PCV test Friday.

I am pretty sure he had hemobart because we have bad fleas here. But
he also had a lot of allergies and this could have caused FIA too. But
like I said I am optimistic and think he's OK. I'm probably in for 5
more PCV tests at $18.00 each (weekly) before the vet is gonna be
ready to let him go.

ONE THING I WANT TO MENTION:

Make sure to get copies of all the xrays and blood tests from the
first visit. You should not forget about your rights as a customer
when treating your animal. Get involved even if you feel like a pain
in the but. Do your homework and know what you are talking about with
your vet.

I know for a fact you have a better chance at healing your cat with an
ilness like this if you learn about it. I believe I helped save my
cat's life! You can too!
