It's puzzling to me that so many people consider the use of a killfile
to be a "punishment". I use mine all the time, and I doubt the people who
are in it feel particularly punished by it - most are probably unaware
of it, as I rarely post a "PLONK" message when I do it. I use it mostly
to keep my reading time down to the minimum, spent mostly on people whose
writing I enjoy.

Once I
calm down, out they come again and we go merrily on our way, with me
promising myself that *this time* I'll show a bit more personal restraint
rather than relying on the KF. :-)

This makes it sound like a killfile is a crutch, and that relying on it
shows some kind of weakness and lack of discipline or something. It's
just a convenience, to make life on the net more pleasant and less time-
consuming.

Yeah, that is a problem. Having someone in your killfile works for
messages posted by the individuals in question (until they change
their posting name), but when other people quote them in replies you
still see them.

I was thinking of changing my posting name, but can't think of what to
change it to, so I guess I'll just be Kyla.

I find that "ignore thread" can be a big help sometimes too.

Hmmm, I may have to try that if things get that bad.
We must get this place back to being fun again.
I loathe all this fussing and fighting.

Its just me and my personal beliefs, Joyce. There's something in me that
says that a killfile is a lazy way to deal with people or threads that annoy
me and that i should have the *self discipline* to not engage in the first
place, or to walk away politely if I somehow get involved.

But thats just me, and I won't condemn others for using them, although I do
dislike the "PLONK!" as a way to do the usenet equivalent of sticking your
fingers in your ears and yelling 'lalalalala' :-)

post to this group, but they are perpetual 'spammers' of the groups
they are in - not spam as in UCE, but just strange
stream-of-conciousness stuff of an obviously disturbed mind. The
regular folks in the NGs they are in pay them no mind either, such
that unless some newbie comes along and replies with the usual "WTF?"
the regulars in the NGs often forget they are there.

As for here, I can usually sense where a thread is heading and just
skip over the worst of it until the the thread pattern looks like its
back to non-flaming chat (the 'shape' of the thread is different).

I read the "PLONK" as a way of trying to do a big, dramatic exit and

someone's posts, just KF them discreetly - there's no need for drama.

I think it's important to remember that this isn't an in-person
conversation, where it would indeed be rude to ignore certain
individuals in a group. It's just individual people scattered over
the globe, sitting alone at their individual computers, and having
several simultaneous conversations using the same medium. So naturally,
we're going to read some of the discussions and not others. And naturally,
we're going to like some of the people and not others. The beauty of
online communication is that you can choose not to interact with some
of the people, without it disrupting the overall social environment.
It's important to make the distinction between online and in-person
social interactions. I think a lot of people tend to forget that there
even *is* a distinction.

I don't mean to detract from your desire for self-control, etc. Just
wanted to say a little more about my philosopy of internet socializing.
