How Much to Feed Buffy?

Jill I found a chart where I figured what my cats were eating every day "in ounces." At that time, they were getting 2.75 ounces per cat twice a day. They are now getting the same total amount every day, but I now divide it into 3 meals instead of twice a day. They have maintained their exact weight on that amount. Duffy weighs 7.4 pounds, Selina weighs 10.2 pounds, and Nikki weighs 10.6 pounds. Keep in mind that this is for cats that are fed exclusively on Wellness no-grains canned food (no dry food and no other brand). I learned many years ago that they do well on a smaller amount of Wellness than other brands. I seems to be more "dense" per calorie, if that is a good description. They thrive on that diet--beautiful, glossy fur, very active, happy. I do weigh them every month to make sure they are maintaining their weight. Even though they are active, I suspect that an outdoor cat might need more food than an indoor cat. MaryL I don't know where I could buy Wellness. PetSmart in Beaufort is probably still in business but it's way on the other side of town. I'd prefer to have some other reason to make the drive. I ran into a woman at the vet last year who *works* for PetSmart... she complained about the long drive! Thanks for the info about quantities. Jill I can't buy it locally, either, so I order it online. I order from 3 different places. They don't charge a shipping fee if you order $49.00 in products. That means I order a couple of cases at a time and just "stockpile" a little. The 3 places I order a amazon.com; mrchewy.com; and petflow.com. This saves a trip to the store (if it were available). Petfooddirect.com also sells it, but it is harder to get free shipping from them. Wellness is costly, but I soon discovered that it does not cost as much as it first appeared because my cats do not need such large portions. All of them have thrived on it. Holly(RB) soon had glossy black fur and no longer had any dandruff. All of my other cats have done beautifully. They do not even develop mats. MaryL |

How Much to Feed Buffy?

She was feeding her dry food from a bin in the pantry and a 9 Lives canned food. Buffy is only the 2nd cat I've ever had. Persia had to eat prescription food for most of her years. I had to dole it out when she gained weight. I've got some dry kibble for Buffy but I'm trying to feed her more canned food than anything else. The problem is I don't know how much to feed her. We all know cats will act like they're starving to death even when they aren't. Buffy is a tad plump so I don't want to overdo it. I do think I need to divvy it up into morning and evening feedings, like I did for Persia. So how much should I feed her? A can of Sheba (or Fancy Feast) is 3 OZ. 85g. Should she get a whole can a day, half in the morning half in the evening? That's what I do. Our two cats, Edgar and Agatha, saw their vet a few months ago and were not overweight. They share a can of Fancy Feast in the morning, and another in the evening, so each one gets half a can twice a day. During the day there's free kibble in a dish. This has been their diet for the past 4 years. Jay There are larger cans of cat food. Friskies and 9 Lives (which I've always felt were slightly inferior due to by-products being the first ingredient). They weigh in at 5.5 OZ (156g) per can. I've looked for feeding guidelines online but of course every site (and every brand of cat food) suggest something different. If you had an only cat and she was a little chubby, how much would you feed her a day? Note: I do play with her and she has toys. It's not as if she doesn't get exercise. She's about to wear me out! G Jill I have 3 cats (Duffy, Selina and Nikki), and I feed them Wellness no-grains canned food. They get one 5.5 oz can and one 12.5 oz can of food every day. No kibble. It is generally suggested that cats get fed twice a day (12-hour intervals, or as close to that as possible). That would work well for Duffy and Nikki. However, I noticed shortly after I adopted Selina that she would often vomit a few minutes after eating. My theory was that she was eating too quickly because she had been rescued from a parking lot. She was also pregnant at the time. I thought she might have a fear of never getting enough food. So, I now feed the same quantities of food listed above, but I now divide it into 3 meals every day. That has worked well for all 3 cats. Free-feeding will work for some cats, but many (just like people) will snack all day and gain weight. MaryL I've been Free-feeding Pit2nya mostly a mix of indoor/hairball/lite dry food and 1/3 small or 2/4 regular canned food. At her lat shots-and-physical, including weigh-in, she had dropped about 12 ounces in 6 months. Our vet was concerned about the loss, and Pit2nya is due back in to be weighed in 2 weeks from visit. So I added a normal regular calorie dry food to the mix, figuring that should do it, but now she's leaving some of her canned food, probably because she's getting more calories from her dry food (cleaver cat). We'll see. She is a medium hair, won't let me brush her much either, so it's hard to tell . . .she looks a bit "fluffy" to me. Sylvia We were back for a weighing yesterday, after 3 weeks, and she was up 4 ounces, probably because I had deleted one of the "indoor slim" dry foods, and added a about 1/3 of normal-not-indoor, not hairball, or older cat, but plain old regular dry. That's the only difference. Sometimes she finishes the canned food, sometimes not, and never down to the bottom of the dry food. I think she does a good job of self regulating. I'll weigh her at home in another 3 weeks, and as long as she stays above 10 pounds, I won't be concerned. Sylvia |

How Much to Feed Buffy?

I know Buffy would kill birds if she could. So, predators aside, that's the other reason I won't let her out. Different cultures, that's all. Jill So, I suggest 85g twice daily and see how it goes. If she puts on weight on that, reduce it. Boyfie get 200g day but he does go out. Its maths. Eat more than you burn off, put on weight. |

GLyN is an average sized cat (little over 10 pounds), and he gets a 5.5 ounce can of wet food a day, plus as much dry food as he wants. He is sleek and healthy, and VERY active. No cat does well on one 85g food daily which is what I am trying to point out to Jill. |
