... "---MIKE---" wrote in message ... Joyce asked: That's great! How long do you have to give him the medicine? Another week. Last night he did a massive poop and this morning he seems to be acting normal. ---MIKE--- ------ Hooray for the big poop! Constipation can cause a build up of toxins in the body so I am sure he could have been feeling ill because of it. I know this because prior to 2003 my social work team worked with both children & adults including learning disability & elderly. Sometimes when an elderly person was showing signs of dementia for the first time which triggered off a call to us from relatives, it turned out that that they had constipation (common in the elderly as they sometimes don't drink enough fluid so they don't have to get up for the bathroom in the night) and once it was recognised and resolved they returned to their normal selves. I was sorry to have to choose between the two disciplines but specialist teams were the new forward and the adult team manager was a nasty piece of work. If the child care team manager had become the adult team manager I would have stayed with my real love which was working with the elderly. Their lives can be so improved (and those of their family who are trying to care for them) with a bit of daycare, respite and some equipment. I will never forget one day. No, stop. I digress. Please digress, or start a new thread. I want to hear about that one day. Joy (who may be needing some of that eldercare in the not so far distant future) This is Tiger's thread. May he poop daily from now on ;-) Sort of sounds like a weird thing to say, but I mean it in the best way. All rspca'ers are not afraid to celebrate either firm poop when it is not, or the final release of days.. Tweed |

Clavamox comes in a liquid suspension too. The cats don't love it
since it smells like vanilla/bananna flavor...but they don't foam at the mouth either. It is a lot better than trying to pill. See http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.h...Td4Aod U2oAJw Debbie |

We're talking about cats here, not human children. Shouldn't the flavors be tuna, or salmon, or rodent? (OK, maybe not rodent - don't want to gross out the human who's administering the medicine!) Something that might actually interest a cat? but they don't foam at the mouth either. It is a lot better than trying to pill. Getting a letter that said "Thank you so much for the bath rail and aids you've arranged, it's changed my life for the better." Arranging a 100 year old congratulation telegram from the Queen when his relatives thought it would arrive automatically. I had to telephone Buckingham Palace for that one. They were so respectful "what is the name of the celebrant?" Joy (who may be needing some of that eldercare in the not so far distant future) I don't know how the US system works for eldercare so what I say may not help. I loved working with the elderly and if I could have continued I would probably still be working. Childcare work is completely different. Unless it is respite care for disabled children the parents hate us for having to examine injuries to their child. It is usually nothing but sometimes it is. The good parents get resentful because they know they are good parents and the bad ones who have done it will threaten. A colleague once got her home phone cables cut by someone she was investigating. He was *so* guilty of raping his stepdaughters. anyway, even though the money is tight until next year I did the best thing by getting out. I love being at home. Boyfie likes me being at home too. |

It's the "bad" side (threats, accusations - even physical violence) that put me off following that career path. I'll just stick to volunteering with the Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America have been in the news recently for upholding their "No 18+ gay people allowed to join or continue their membership with us" policy. Here in the UK, we're "all inclusive", regardless of sexuality - unless the member or prospective member has a substantiated accusation or conviction for sex offences, including paedophillia. anyway, even though the money is tight until next year I did the best thing by getting out. I love being at home. Boyfie likes me being at home too. Indeed. I think my neighbour's cats like finding someone at my home during the day as well - that's probably one reason why they come visiting. I've been told that now the school holidays are upon us, they don't come visiting quite so much - there's children at their forever home to play with :-) -- MatSav |

I wish people would get away from this idea. However Scout leaders, unfortunately, often have to be investigated for their interest in young boys if there is an allegation 1/20 shows that the investigation was a good idea. Please don't think I think you are anything other than a nice man who helps young boys not to be dreadful. |

The daughter of a friend of mine is training to be a social worker. She wants to work with children, and in her 'spare' time, already works part time in these private group homes which are the latest local answer for for children who can't be left with their parents and can't find foster placements. She's a braver person than I am; I don't think I'd be able to handle it. OTOH, I find working with at least one elderly person rather challenging too. I think I'll stick to cats. -- Cheryl |

Alternative to pilling
.. . . if your finger is thin enough, youcan open his mouth and shove the pill down his throat [this works wonderfully with large dogs], however if you get your finger too far to either side of kitty’s mouth and he gets a tooth or fang through your fingernail, you will get blood poisoning, which you will be able to watch run up your arm, from your finger; in a straight-edged ribbon of red, toward the gland under your armpit where the blood poisoning will wind up, ruin you for life, ifnot kill you first, if you donot get to the Emergency Room in time. Veterinarians actually do this, some donot, who, instead, send you home with the pills to let you suffer how to do it . . . and silly us, never ask why donot the Veterinarians give us a liquid that we can easily, just squirt into the animal’s mouth with the syringe that comes packed in the bottle of medicine . . .
Iam wondering if this is furball season because iam having a lot of vomiting going on [some, including food and/or fluid, and some with just a furball] all around the house, ever since I changed from “9 Lives” to “Purina” for urinary health. . . However iam sure it is a positive season time to use “Revolution” on them. The reason you use “Revolution” is because it is the only one that may get the ear mites aswell as the worms and fleas and ticks etc. I get it off the Internet from other Countries at half the price ifnot less, but you will need to do a lot of Googling to find the companies. If you have more than one kitty youcan get the dog boxes and break it down according to weight-per-kitty. Don’t get the largest dog box, because I think that has no viable turnover and becomes old and stale. The name of the stuff is “selamectin” no matter what kind of animal or human it is used on . . . Out of the greenish, “20..1--40 kg body weight” box I use 17 drops for and adult kitty and less for the kittens/going up to teenagers etc. This allows for waste left on the sides of the shot glass and in the eyedropper etc. You can always take a pill; place it in a thin piece of material, or maybe wax paper, and hammer it with a heavy hammer (maybe twice or so); turning it into a powder, and mixing it into a shot glass with a tad, bit of water [let it sit to soakin a while, then stir]; suck it up into a *plastic*, medicine dropper and; going into the side of kitty’s mouth; turn it downward and squirt it down her throat [thisis a skill you will need to perfect, so be patient] . . . always save your medicine droppers, because I donot seem to beable to purchase small ones . . . eyedroppers are glass. The alternative is a number of 20 mile trips to the vet for a shot. ---MIKE--- In the White Mountains of New Hampshire (44 15' N - Elevation 1580') |

Just one point though - Scouting in the UK has been "unisex" since the mid 1990's, and isn't only for boys. I also agree with you about the 1/20 - there will *always* be bad apples in the barrel, no matter how careful our checks. I raised concerns about a fellow leader once. He was later convicted of a sexual offence against a child, but not one involved in Scouts (and not as a result of the report I made) - but it did validate my concerns. -- MatSav |
