A lot of folks only show up for the Jellicle Ball. I guess it's their way
of keeping up with the folks they remember from long ago. Many of them are
too busy to participate on a regular basis, but they make time for
Jellicle Ball.

As for tributes, it's pretty much "post a tribute when you feel like it".
It should be after the first calling of names and before the final
calling, but if folks schedules are such that they can't make it then,
then whenever they are able to post their tributes is fine. Those posts
make it possible for all of us to remember the ones who have gone ahead of
us.

The first couple of Jellicle Balls, there were a lot more
speeches...there was a Host & Hostess for it & they gave welcoming
speeches, other cats told stories about adventures and things that'd
happened on the newsgroup, somekitty gave a non-denominational
invocation, then the Calling, then the tributes themselves.

After the Tributes and the Final Calling, there was the Ball, with
some cats acting as caterers, some tending to kittens, general
mingling sort of stuff.

I don't know why other kitties haven't created new positions, or
revived the Host & Hostess, because there is plenty of room for those
with the imagination to do so.

People come back to post tributes in the group where their kitties
once played. There are probably dozens of reasons why people stop
posting, but I could give at least one name for each of these: ill
health, a crackdown at work so their access dried up, family
obligations, a promotion which resulted in nearly weekly business
trips, a cat died and with it the joy of participating. Real Life has
a nasty way of stealing the things you do for fun.

If the purpose of the Ball is to give some small measure of comfort,
to offer a place to declare that "this life *mattered*" among people
who understand how true that is, then their cats belong as much as
those of the current regular posters...a request to be included has
always been sufficient, and every Tribute welcome.

Mietze was not the first cat to perform the Calling, she volunteered
ten Balls ago when no other kitty had stated they wanted to do it and
it was getting very close to the time that the Ball would begin. I
learned the hard way that year that trusting to memory or the archive
to assemble names right before the Ball just won't cut it, names are
missed. Right after that Ball was over, I started keeping notes as
each loss post was made on the newsgroup, preparing for the *next*
Ball. I offer sympathy, ask House of names when they aren't given in
the original post, let them know about the Ball and the Walk and that
their cat will be an Honoree. That's been what I've done ever since,
I don't just arrive for the Ball and then leave, though anyone who
doesn't read the replies to loss posts wouldn't see me and I do not
pretend to the title "regular".

The mistake I made was not asking after every Ball whether anyone else
wanted to do it, but instead went right back to collecting names,
caught in the circle. It's meant a lot to me to perform what I
believe to be a valuable service to the community, but it was never
*mine* to keep.

Mietze wasn't going to announce this for a week or two, but this is as
good a place as any. She has retired as Gatherer and Caller of Names
effective immediately. The position is officially open.

Default Questionz

Hello to all. My cats Oprah Anne and Princess Pasha played here for
years (starting in 1996) when I was able to get rpcc through
newsgroups via my dialup account. When that dried up, and I had to
rely on the more difficult to follow internet groups on a dialup
account, I had to give it up for a variety of reasons, the biggest of
which was lack of time, although I did check in occasionally to see
what was going on. This group was always about fun and love for me,
and I can only hope it will remain so for all of you..

I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the wonderful work that
Mietze (by way of Melissa) has done for all of us over these last
years. She alone has remembered the names of those cats, dogs,
ferrets, other furs (even a snake or two), and hoomins who have passed
to the rainbow bridge during the past years. She puts their names in
her Walk of Remembrance and has worked tirelessly on the behalf of all
of us to keep the names of those we've loved alive forever. This
year, my beloved Lissa's name was called after she died shortly after
last year's Jellicle Ball. There has been no one more dedicated to
this task than Mietze/Melissa has been, and I wish to thank her for
that.

That said (and I wish to make clear this is not aimed at those who
simply asked questions), I would like to add that those few of you who
have *complained* should be ashamed. If rpcc no longer wishes to have
a Jellicle Ball, that's fine, but it is a sad day when some in a group
of people who have supposedly been brought together by love of their
furs should attack someone who has done nothing but try to give some
consolation and solace to those who have lost their loved ones. I
have to wonder if those who have been so quick to criticize will step
up to the plate and remember those who go to the bridge this coming
year.

I hope that by asking questions it is understood I did not mean to deminish
any worth of anyone to this site. It is a wonderful place to be. I have a
vision problem and don't have a screen reader at this time so it is hard to
read all the history. To not have a Jellica Ball would be a great loss.

Very well said, Ellie. Melissa and Mietze have been Godsends to many. What
Melissa has done over the years is detailed and often painful, and she's
most appreciated.
