Sigh .. is this going to end??
Weekend from HELL so far. I've been on the cat almost continually ..
nursing him .. trying to get him better. Friday, I couldn't get him to eat. Saturday he ate some, but seemed detached from food. Then he finally got hungry last night. Ate about a tablespoon or so of food .. after I finger fed him 1/8 of it. Today he's asked all day for food. I gave him some earlier and he tolerated it .. however tonight I gave him some more .. and he almost barfed it back up (If I soothe him, and talk quietly to him, and lightly pet him while he's trying to upchuck .. then he usually won't barf it up). But then he lays there and quivers (full body shakes). I'd take him right to the vet but two problems. I spent most of my $$ on my son for Christmas, the light bill, etc. $240 vet bill put me tight place. Not trying to air out my problems .. but I'm down to a change jar (get paid on the 5th, and have to pay the mortgage off of that .. wont be much left after that). So if I have to (and I just might) go BACK to the vet and any procedures, that's another $30 (visit) + whatever +whatever else. He seems to be allergic to the meds, or maybe it's the food. Hell I can't tell. The emergency vet is TERRIBLY expensive .. and he's drinking / urinating / eating some (whatever I give him, but still trying to throw it up). I'm worried that there might be something more wrong with him than just an irritated small intestine. I just don't know what to do. I'm sorry to lean on everyone so hard .. just gotta get this out. Been up till 4 - 5 every morning .. nursing him as best as I can. With very little improvement .. it's really taxing my sanity. Any ideas / advice / whatever would be great! Thanks |

I am not a vet, but from the advice I've read elsewhere, try uncomplicated and easily digested food such as chicken containing baby food, or boiled chicken and plain white rice in a mush. Give only a little at a time. You may also want to try natural yoghurt mixed with a little water to restore his gut bacteria. I know if I've had the trots, I can't go back to eating my normal diet straight away, I have to start on the 'easy' foods in small quantities and work up to large meals and/or spicey things and hard to digest stuff (like cheese) in a few days after my gut has settled back down. I'm sure if this advice is wrong, others will correct it. Otherwise, all I can offer you is prayers and purrs. Goodluck. Yowie |

Yowie I'd second the suggeston of plain yoghurt - I've found it does seem to help settle a queasy kitty stomach, and they usually like the taste. If he's still eating a bit of his usual food, smaller but more frequent meals of that are probably a good idea at this stage even if he's begging for more. Also, is he able to get some sleep? If he has a dark comfortable place to sleep in that might help. If things don't look up though, another trip to the vet wouldn't be a bad idea. When will the regular vet open be again? |

Rob, I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty health problems! Been there,
done that, so I remember how awful it feels. We're keeping our fingers crossed that kitty will feel better SOON! Also, is the e-mail address in the header your correct one? If so, I just sent you an e-mail. Dan |

Yep, Pedialyte. I've even drunk it myself when I was getting dehydrated during bouts of illness. Jill "Rob Poe" wrote in message ... Weekend from HELL so far. If you can get to an Indian food store or restaurant, try a bit a the plain
yogurt which in Panjabi is called "dahi." It's typically served for dipping bread or cooling down a raging curry dish. It's not like the sour plain yogurt you buy in the cartons in your regular dairy case, but is creamy with just a bit of tang. Our cats love it as a treat, and when my Fritzie was ill long ago it helped boost him back up. It won't cause Tyler to get tummy trouble; in fact, yogurt seems to be good for the digestion, and makes the stools firmer. Our vet said it was fine for cats, because in the preparation the dahi loses all the lactose. I hope this'll help your baby. In the meantime, continuing purrs for him to come around! Gatorade doesn't have to follow any specific formulation, but because pedialyte is for babies, it actually follows the ratios that are best for absorption. -- monique, who spoils Oscar unmercifully pictures: http://www.bounceswoosh.org/rpca |
