'Covering Up' food
On Fri, 19 Mar 2004 16:49:04 GMT, O J yodeled:
Hi All, We've all seen a cat make 'covering up' paw swipes after putting down something we think should just tickle our cat's appetite. How many of us have then gone and offered something else to kitty only to have him or her repeat the behavior. This is often followed with the cat's 'hungry' behavior. Altogether a frustrating experience for a catslave. As far as I know my mother holds the record for opening different cans of cat food to present to a cat who seemed interested in getting more cans opened, but not interested in eating anything. One night I saw her driven into a state by my cat, The Puddy, where she just had to find something the little rotter would eat. She must have opened half a dozen cans, laid them before his majesty, and watched in frustration as he proceeded to make the 'covering up' motion to each dish that was presented. When he finally got tired of this game, he walked away without eating a bite. I won't repeat here the remarks she made regarding cats and where they could put their snooty attitude. Regards and Purrs, O J My personal favorite is when he gulps it down, hurks it back up, then immediately asks for more. I call him "Caligula" when he does that. :P Theresa alt.tv.frasier FAQ: http://www.im-listening.net/FAQ/ Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful. Laku does this "covering up" thing too at times. Sometimes it's when
we've just given him new food and he's sniffed at it and then "covers it up", sometimes he walks up to his bowl, first does a few covering up scratches and then settles down to eat. I've begun to think that the covering up scratches wouldn't necessarily mean that he thinks the food offered was like poop - not up to his standards - but maybe also, at least sometimes, something like "I'd better cover this up so nobody else finds it", like a d*g burying a bone... -- Christine in Vantaa, Finland christal63 (at) yahoo (dot) com photos: http://photos.yahoo.com/christal63 |

That's an interesting form of feline entertainment. I wonder if cats hold competitions with each other? ("I got her to open 6 cans tonight!" "Yeah, but can you beat the record of 15?") Persia does this too, but it's usually after she's taken a few bites and then she scratches the corner of the cloth placemat her bowl is on over the bowl. Either she's trying to protect it from scavengers (what scavengers? This is a single-cat household!) or maybe it is her version of putting plastic wrap over the bowl so the food will stay fresh Jill |

I like both these analogies a lot. |

When big K has his occasional spot of vomitage, mu will usually gambol across and chow on the steaming sick. Hey - can't complain, saves me a cleaning job! Steve. |

Big cats (lions, tigers and leopards) put their food in trees and or hide it so maybe its an instinctual behavior. She usually eats more later than 'reburies' it. Imp does this EVERY time he eats. He has to scratch and cover it
completely, so "no one" can find it. He'll be scratching for like 5 minutes around the carpet. I've learned not to leave anything on the floor because I'll find it in the food or water dish. Can you imagine coming home to one of your t-shirts in the food dish? Or your bathroom mat in the water dish? Once I found one of my hair scrunchies in the food dish. Sheesh! Kristi |

Cleo Carrington Smith does this after she's eaten too. In fact on occasion, she has sniffed our plates after we've eaten and done then as well! Does your cat have a feral past? I believe it is something to do with that. Not all cats do it though. Betty does it, and though I can't be 100% sure, I don't think that she was ever feral. She's the most soft, dainty, spoiled little thing I've ever seen. |

But, then it could be that she picked it up from her mom.
