Even with a needle biopsy, which I suspect this was (otherwise there
would have been open surgery) there's always the risk of nicking or
severing an artery. It's a low risk, but there are *lots* of blood
vessels in the liver. Most likely no-one did anything wrong, and for
some reason the bleeding didn't stop.
As far as ultrasound, no, standard ultrasound wouldn't induce internal
bleeding. It's the same process used to monitor human pregnancies,
including high-risk pregnancies in which an increased risk of bleeding
could be catastrophic.

I've had similar cases where no-one did anything wrong but I didn't get
charged or I got charged a reduced fee partly because it was an
(unforseen) complication, partly because they know I have limited funds.
I suspect that Kenzie's case is the same. Any way about it, I think
blaming anyone in this would be counterproductive to healing from the
tragedy.

I will be heartbroken if Kenzie died as a *result* of the biopsy. I
hope she had a liver condition that was in an end stage, and nothing
could have done to change that. Even if it's not anyone's fault, the
idea that she might have been on the road to recovery, and then just
had the *bad luck* to die from a test meant to help her get better
is just too tragic.

She *was* very sick, after all. Maybe she only appeared to be
recovering, on the morning of the day she ended up having to be
put down. It was touch-and-go the entire time.

Gandalf, when do you get the results of the liver biopsy? I was under
the impression that you wouldn't have that until next week. I guess
you'll know more then.

I don't think it makes sense to lay blame, as others have said. When my
first cat (not first ever, just first as just mine) got sick and died, I had
a necropsy done but I told the vet I didn't want to know the results. They
had such a hard time diagnosing him and I just wanted them to learn
something from his death.

The vet ended up telling me what he found even though I already had closure
with his peaceful passing.

"
I saw a new star in the sky tonight, shining brighter than the others. So
bright I couldn't take my eyes off of it and I wondered what is was and
where it came from.

Now I know.

Please accept my deepest condolences.

That was beautiful Karla, thank you for posting that.

Thank you Adrian, I copied ALL the messages that were there, and
put them on Rainbow Stationary (you can do that with Yahoo)
and sent them to Gandalf.

I'm so sorry. Kenzie was such a cute cobby kitty. We'll miss her
very much too.

I know how you feel. One of my dearly departed died en route to the
emergency vet, on a Sunday morning. The rest of that day, and beyond,
I was a total wreck.

I am wondering what was involved with this liver biopsy. Thinking
maybe the vet office gave you so much free of charge because they felt
responsible for lousing things up. And could the ultrasound process
have somehow induced internal bleeding?

In any event, this is the saddest ending. I couldn't even finish
reading your post at first, it was such a shock. I wish I could be
there to cry with you.

Hey, I FINALLY figured out how to reply!

MY VET didn't do the ultrasound or biopsy: a 'specialist' , that CAME
to my clinic to do the ultrasound, did.

But, my vet felt very, VERY bad for me because of what happened.

It wasn't her fault in the least.

But charging only what was left in my account: she didn't have to do
that. I even asked about it: she simply said: 'we care about
Kenzie'...I got the feeling that teh question was a bit of a surprise
for her....but maybe that was me.

She was VERY upset about what happened to Kenzie.

She has a BIG heart, that's for sure.

I remember VIVIDLY when Tak lost Betty...he didn't get Dot and Buster
for a long time, though.

I can't think about getting another cat now....All I have to so is
think the work 'Kenzie', and I have trouble reading the monitor

You are dead on, minnow

Needle biopsy, 20 gauge needle, which is fairly small.

For drawing blood from your arm at a doctor's office, they usually
use a 21 gauge needle, which is just one size SMALLER than 20 gauge.

It's called 'fine needle aspiration', when they do a biopsy like this.
They puncture the liver, and use a little suction from a syringe to
draw in cells, or a little 'plug' of tissue.

The risk is small, but not zero, unfortunately

I don't think I'll ever let another cat get a liver biopsy, though.

Even IF my vet had done the biopsy, it wouldn't be her 'fault'. It was
just very bad luck.

Perhaps if Kenzie has been considerably younger, and didn't have
hyperthyroidism....and wasn't on Tapazole...and didn't have the auto-
immune defect that cause the eosinophilic granuloma, so she was on
prednisone....and, and and.

Nobody's fault.

Bad things happen to good people...and to VERY good cats, too
