Default What to do to a sleeping cat

I wonder what one should do to a sleeping cat? I've been facing this
dilemma for as long as I've had Betty.

Sometimes, I feel like I should let her sleep as soundly as possible,
and I tiptoe around her and do everything quietly.

Sometimes, I think I should let Betty know that I love her, even when
she's sleeping, and try to communicate that to her without waking her
up. I'll sneak up to her and pet her gently, or stand a few feet away
from her and whisper to her. My hope is that she'll dream about how
much I love her. But often, this wakes her up.

Often, I just kiss her, because she looks so cute and kissable. This
wakes her up most of the time, but she's getting used to it, and will
just settle back down again. My favorite spot to kiss her is on the
back of the head.

Sometimes, I wonder if she's cold, and I'll check the temperature of
her extremities by gently taking the tips of one of her ears between
my lips. If the ear tip is cool, then I'll grab a blanket and tuck
her in.

Anything else I could do?

Roll her on her back and rub her tummy?

Take her picture ... and post it somewhere.

Fleagor was sleeping in my chair last night: I already had the camera
out for the "Three on a Shelf" page
(http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/031106/three_on_shelf.html)
and there he was. I tacked the picture on to the bottom of that page.

oh, you're just as bad as I am. Jazz can never sleep through unless I'm also
sleeping. He is contantly being petter, kissed, his toes are rubbed, his
back is stroked. Poor baby. I bet they love it, though, all that affection
from their meowmies.

Well, I used to favour covering my parents' sleeping cat(s) with
individual sheets of newspaper or such. A bit like cat Jenga - the
challenge being to see if you can use up a whole newspaper without
waking the furry one.

While cat is asleep, you could glue all your furniture to the ceiling,
so that the furry one is very confused upon waking up. Who knows,
maybe she would lie on her back and wave her paws in the air. That
would be nice.

You could also covertly place cat treats 'pon her body, so she has a
pleasant awakening.

You could gain revenge my sleeping upon your cats head, purring loudly
in its ears, or asking it to cook you a nice meal. In a similar vein,
you could go and crap in its litter box.

You could paint its claws with nail polish. That would be stylish.

You could plait its whiskers.

You could read cat-porn to it ('the mouse was completely naked...').

However, I mostly go and play with the cat toys myself. It's the only
time I can get near 'em, when the cats are asleep. The problem is, I
keep batting the furry mice under the oven, and I can't persuade the
cats to recover them for me. Ingrates.

HTH,
Steve.

You might have a point. I haven't really taken too many pictures of
Betty sleeping. Your "Three on a shelf" pic is great.

I hope they love it! I was actually going to ask this question when I
first got Betty, but I thought I would be able to figure it out on my
own. I do play with Betty's toes a little when she sleeps on my lap.
I think it's fascinating how they're all webbed and cocked. I didn't
realize how complex and dextrous cat paws and wrists were until I got
Betty.

Sometimes, when Betty is sleeping, she twitches her digits in a random
sequential pattern. It looks all the world like she's dreaming that
she's playing the piano.

Which reminds me that my favorite sequence in "Garfield His 9 Lives"
was "Diana's Piano".
