I have been a long time fan of this site, as another section scams Nigerian
scammers with much humour, but the man who replies to Nigerian scammers also
writes 'crank' letters to various companies.

This is one of his best:

If you're paddling upstream in a canoe and a wheel falls off, how many
pancakes can you fit in a doghouse? None, icecream doesn't have bones.

That is so funny, the letter itself and the visual it brings to mind.

Laslo Toth lives!

"Laslo Toth" is a character created by Don Novello, a comedian who was
also popular on Saturday Night live. You may not be familiar with Laslo
because he might not have been that popular in Australia. In fact, his
first book, which came out in the mid-1970s, was called "Laslo Toth,
American". He did very similar stuff - wrote letters to companies,
asking and/or complaining about things such as why a box of bath soap
says "keep dry" on the package, when it's supposed to go in the bath?
He also wrote letters to politicians, particularly in Washington, which
included Richard Nixon and his cabal. All the letters to Washington
generated the same form-letter post card in reply.

Novello published a second Laslo book in the 80s I think. Some of the
response letters were funny because the people were already onto him,
having seen the first book.

(In case you want to google about it, his name might actually be spelled
"Lazlo" - I can't remember at the moment.)

This also made me think of the movie "Meet the Parents", with Ben Stiller,
about a prospective husband meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first
time, and encountering a level of hostile scrutiny that he wasn't expecting.
At the dinner table, the guy gets trapped in a lie about milking his cat
that I thought was one of the funniest bits in the movie. (I know most
people thought that movie wasn't funny - I liked it, so sue me.)

There have been a whole bunch of them:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoax_letter_writers

I think Henry Root was the first. There is a recent one Wikipedia
hasn't caught up with, two young English women - their book came out
last year (the one I remember is when they asked the Royal Air Force
rescue helicopter team if they could be picked up out of the sea on
a practice run, and offering to shag the entire copter crew when
they were turned down).
