Time for a tour
As kitties are busy dancing, dining, relaxing, and otherwise occupying
themselves the voice of Captain LeGrand echoes from the ships's PA speakers. "Your attention please; this is Captain LeGrand speaking. Several kitties have asked for a guided tour of this vessel. As master of MV Purrbearer I would be delighted to provide this tour. I would ask that all kitties interested in joining this tour gather on the sun deck in one hour. Thank you." |

Time for a tour
Welcome, kitties. I would like to take this opportunity to express again
how glad I and the crew are to have the cats of the Community joining us aboard the MV Purrbearer again. It gives us great pleasure to be able to serve you as Cleopatra Silvercat would have liked. We are now on the sun deck. This is the foreward-most weather deck, so when the ship must sail through storms it can be a rather nasty place to be. As you can see we have many deck chairs, soft cushions, and kitty condos, and a sturdy plexiglass skirt around the rail to prevent overly enthusiastic kitties from going overboard. There are TurboScratchers every few yards, and we sprinkle fresh catnip on them twice a day. Back here, through this hatch, is the toy deck. We have toy boxes all along this bulkhead, stocked with fluffy mousies, feather wands, Panic Mouses, jingle balls, and bunches of other toys. These areas that look about like hoomin bathtubs are kitty play arenas, for those kitties that like to batbat toy around in tubs. And here you see the innovation I am most proud of - the climbing center! You can see a pit full of soft plastic balls at the base of the climbing wall. Then the wall itself is covered with thick cork, just the right texture to support kitty claws. Every five feet or so there are cubby-holes for kitties who want to rest or just observe. But the most impressive part was designed by Miss Amelia. You know how sometimes young kitties will climb a little higher than they're comfortable with, then panic and can't figure out how to get back down? We had that happen a few times here, and had to send crewcats to rescue the little ones. But Miss Amelia built some microphones and position sensors into the wall, and put in a meow-recognition system. Watch what happens now... [With that a crew-cat takes a run towards the wall, scrambles half-way up, and stops with his claws embedded in the cork wall. He then meows, trying to sound like a scared kitten. High over head a hum can be heard. The cats standing below on the deck noticed a tubular rail running along the top of the climbing wall. As they watched, a small motorized cart rides along the rail until directly above the crew-cat. It then lowers a small basket on a steel cable. The basket descends until it is beside the kitty, then works under him and raises itself until it just contacts his back paws. As soon as the crew-cat releases his claws from the wall, the basket lowers him gently to the deck.] As you can see, kittens will no longer get stranded on the wall when they become frightened! They just have to meow for help and the automatic rescue basket will come and get them down. Amelia did an excellent job designing this! Now, come belowdeck with me and I'll show you the lower decks. Let's take the elevator, and work our way from the bottom up. [Capt. LeGrand leads everykitty to the elevator. It's nicely appointed with lots of chrome and soft carpeting. The control panel has buttons labeled Bridge and 1 through 5, with a pawprint pad beside the button for Bridge. The Captain presses "5". The elevator hums for a few moments, then the doors open into a somewhat noisy area.] We won't stay down here long, since it's a little loud. This is the engine room. As you can see we have a really big diesel engine, and that shiny big thing over there is a MHD engine for when we need to go really fast. And over there are the boilers for keeping the rooms nice and warm, and the cooling plant that lets us keep all the fishies and stuff in the storage lockers nice and cold. [He then leads them to an isolated portion of the engineering spaces, up against the port side of the hull. He open a heavily insulated door and leads them through. When he closes the door the noise of the engines disappears entirely. The engine noise is replaced by the sound of moving water.] This is the water activities port. We reached it through the engine room, but it can also be reached by means of this staircase. This large door here is hydraulically opened and closed, and offers access to the ocean. [The Captain presses a large green button, and the door silently glides upwards.] As you can see, we are just a couple of feet above the ocean surface! We have Jet Skis, parasails, and other activities available from here when the vessel is at rest. We can also launch and recover tenders and other light boats when needed. Now let's go up a deck... [he leads them up a staircase.] This is the crew deck. All of the staff kitties except me, the Executive Officer, and the Communications Officer have rooms here. This room is not occupied this trip - [he opens a stateroom door.] As you can see each cabin has a nice, comfy kitty bed or warm cushion, whichever the crewkitty prefers. Each room has a private litter box, and a refrigerator so the staff kitties can keep their own private stock of snacks if they want to. There is also a toy box in each room. [He then leads them down the corridor a few doors.] This is the staff dining room. Everybody is out on duty right now. The chef, Chef Andre, is kept busy providing meals for the crew, and also helps out in the guest dining room when his help is needed. Now let's see third deck... [he leads everykitty up another stairway.] This is the cabin deck. Most of you have already chosen your cabins, but those who have not may do so at any time. This is a typical stateroom. This one has three kitty cushions, but other rooms have anywhere from one to eight cushions or kitty beds. And of course we can rearrange rooms as guests prefer. And check this out - each room has a balcony! The balconies are recessed into the side of the ship, so the wind won't get too bad when we're under way. And of course we have deluxe litter boxes, in-cabin refrigerators, toy and nip boxes, chilled water fountains - and room service is available from the guest kitchen 24 hours a day. Now let's go forward. We have a couple of conference rooms here, which can also served as ballrooms. Right now the wall between the rooms has been rolled back, so it is configured as one large room. And this large table here? This is the very table at which the late Cleopatra Silvercat negotiated many of her wise settlements and truces between disagreeing factions. You have already seen the lounge and the dining room. Since they are both in the bow of the ship, they both offer excellent views to the front of the vessel. This large LCD monitor mounted to the wall shows a large-scale map with the position of vessel highlighted, as well as out bearing and speed. I will also mention a special feature of this deck - the deck is gyroscopically stabilized. Many of the guests who frequent this vessel don't take heavy seas very well, so this deck was designed to remain perfectly level during all kinds of weather. Even if the ship has to pass through extremely violent seas, guests on this deck won't feel any pitching or rolling. Now let's go up again. [He again leads them up stairs again.] This is the entertainment deck. Towards the box of the vessel you will see the catsino. We have provision for all of the popular table games, as well as slot machines. Here amidships is the craft area. We have balls of yarn to destroy, bolts of fabric to shred, and other fun supplies on hand. Specially for this voyage we added this lovely shop, the shipboard Boutique. We have provided ample space for all of Miss Pi2nya's stock, as well as laying in some lovely items selected by Mrs. LeGrand. And finally, for those kitties who like to get wet, we have this indoor swimming pool. It is kept at a nice, comfortably warm temperature. We also have the outdoor pool you noticed before on the sun deck. Now let's return to the deck. [He again leads them up stairs] This elevated building is called the superstructure. The bridge, in the center at the top, is where we run the ship. The bridge wings, off to the sides, allow us to observe activity all around the ship. And behind the bridge is the aviation deck. Miss Harri Roadcat makes frequent use of the ship's catacopter. My quarters and those of the Executive Officer and the Communications Officer are also in the superstructure. So these are the primary features of the Motor Vessel Purrbearer. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. |
