Default Kitty Farmcat is doing well

I've not updated about KFC for a while now. She's doing really well atm.
She will not eat anything except "real chicken" unfortunately - I worry
about feeding her exclusively on her "ultimate favourite food" as there
will be nothing to tempt her if she deteriorates again, and I do wish I
could get her back on to cat food, but I can't.
She has put on an amazing amount of weight, she was really frail and now
she isn't. It might be due to the two anabolic steriod injections she got
from TED or the rehydration fluid that she needed because of her CRF that
I gave her to drink. She chose to drink it over the choice of plain
water, maybe because of the sugar in it.
She's on plain water to drink with rehydration fluid once a week now, all
the chicken she can eat is hers and this girl is getting plump.
Her fur got horribly matted because she does not groom herself now, and I
could do nothing about it for three months when I broke my ribs and
shortly after that fell down the stairs and did dire things to my wrist,
shoulder and neck. I have managed to tease and pluck out some of her mats
gradually now - she hates it and slashes, but what she doesn't know is
that I will be asking my friend June (who can handle anything,
stallions..) to visit and hold her - it will be a towel-over-the-head
job - to tease all those mats out, and just maybe, if June is up for it
once we get her groomed out from the mats, she might get a bath for the
first time in her life, her fur is so horribly greasy.
I know June will be up for it, actually, watch this space.

Wonderful to hear. Stinky is doing well, but I wish he would get fat!

I posted to this thread yesterday, and it never showed up?? In case
it's just missing on
my end, and not yours, I won't repeat the whole thing. But wanted to
say, I'm so
glad she's gaining weight and improving. Wish I had a magic answer for
the greasy
fur & mats; I bet once she does get groomed, she'll feel even better.
They seem to know when
they look pretty. :-)

I'm so glad she's doing well. At her age I'd let her eat anything she
wants. KFC taming purrs for you and June.

OMG!!! I missed your posting about this (I have been only spotty
about reading lately because I hadn't been using my computer at
home any more).

I did not post about it, I thought it would be boring for you all.

Gads, girl, that sounds dreadful! Are you OK now? Be *very*
careful about your neck. I learned the hard way that injuries to
the neck can show up weeks or months after a fall. If you feel the
least bit of pain in your neck, or start getting tingling in your
fingers, be sure to get yourself the to surgery as soon as you can.
Mega healing purrs on their way to you!!!

All fingers and the thumb in my left hand are numb. Doc says "it
will come right eventually" not sure what the timescale is, but 6
months now and I would have hoped to see an improvement by now.

Tweed

Oh man! Do go back to the doctor, Tweed! If it is bone pressing on
a nerve in your neck, they can fix that. But if that nerve gets too
damaged they *can't* fix that. Please don't let that go on too long!

Fluffy Tails,

CatNipped

I'm in agreement with CatNipped. How have you manged this long like this,
Tweed?

1. Please stop falling down stairs. It does nothing to increase your life
span.

2. Glad KFC is doing so much better. She has a huge fan club both in here
and at my house. I always have to read her updates to Rob and Mandy. I
suspect the owners listen in as well. We love to hear about the little
things she does to keep her life going on her terms.

3. Just a suggestion, and I'm sure you've heard it before. We keep a
supply of those little jars of canned meat for babies around in case one of
the owners gets sick. Not being from the Great State of Britain, I don't
know how your baby food is packaged, but even with some vegetables in it, it
would help KFC if she'll eat it. The big thing is to keep her dining.

4. How are Sir Francis Drake and all those chickens of yours doing? How is
Boyfriend? I'm a member of his fan club too.

5. When KFC moved in, did you ever think that your life would change in so
many different ways, some of them directly caused by her?

PS: can you tell me where you found the rehydration fluid recipe - I
would like to try it with her. Thanks!

Two tablespoons of sugar, one quarter teaspoon salt, one quarter teaspoon
bicarbonate of soda (baking powder) in a litre of boiled water.
I cannot tell you where I found it - I put it in my book of useful things
some years ago, I knew I would need it one day.

Tweed

Here are a few links I found with similar recipes, some don't use the soda
at all, only sugar and salt in the water. And then there are other recipes
too...

http://www.survival-center.com/med-faq/med-9.htm
http://www.simplyprepared.com/rehydration%20drinks.htm

Interesting, thanks. I expect there are many recipes as good, or better
than the one I posted, but I happened to have that one written down. It
made an amazing difference to KFC. From being at death's door and being
threatened with RB in a few days time by TED before I gave it to her, she is
as fine as she ever could be with her advanced CRF. She has put on a lot of
weight - she was very frail before that and now she isn't. The extra
calories the sugar provided might have helped with that.
I was worried about whether she would drink it of her own accord so I
provided a bowl of plain water at the side of it, but she chose the
rehydration fluid in preference. The poor girl had been turning herself
inside out with diarrhoea that would not clear up so I kept her on it for
about 3 weeks.
As it possibly helps with replacing essential stuff she excretes by drinking
too much with her CRF I intend to offer her some about once a fortnight. It
can't harm her in the long term, as to be honest, she doesn't *have* a long
term so I'm not worried it might rot her teeth ;-)
No-one, not even the vets, can tell you how to keep what seems like a 200
year old cat alive. I played it by ear and it's working. She is bright and
still her feisty old self. Having said that, I do have a lot of experience
with very elderly animals over the years and might not have risked it if I
hadn't.
Although TED did say to me last time we were there "you are an elderly
animal specialist, aren't you?" I do think he would be surprised if he saw
KFC today. He would not believe it.

Cats get vitamin D from self-grooming. P'r'aps she should be getting some
booster shots, or at leat try getting her to lick some margarine!

They do? Now that's an interesting fact I did not know. Where did you find
out about that?

1. Please stop falling down stairs. It does nothing to increase your
life span.

I know. I fell over Boyfriend the first time. Broke my ribs. He was
winding round my legs as I was preparing his food, tripped me up. I was
anxious not to harm him by treading on him so that made me fall on to my
kitchen trolley. If I hadn't cared about hurting him I would have been
okay, I guess.
One of the most painful injuries I have ever had. Good old June had to come
to the rescue. I could not even step into my porch to get cat food, let
alone see to my chickens. The food I had on the worktop for the cats I had
to throw onto the floor.
Three days back at work from that, I fell down the stairs carrying an armful
of laundry, I stepped on the sleeve of something that was dangling.
Shoulder, wrist and neck.

2. Glad KFC is doing so much better. She has a huge fan club both in
here and at my house. I always have to read her updates to Rob and Mandy.
I suspect the owners listen in as well. We love to hear about the little

Well, that's so nice. Thank you. She is a very brave little cat.

3. Just a suggestion, and I'm sure you've heard it before. We keep a
supply of those little jars of canned meat for babies around in case one

It's been suggested before, yes. We don't seem to have canned meat for
babies here in the UK. We do have little jars of vegetable and turkey gloop
which I tried last time her appetite was out of the window. The verdict was
no, are you mad?

4. How are Sir Francis Drake and all those chickens of yours doing?

Thursday evening a friend and I are on the hunt for 2 wives for Francis
Drake. He will need at least two - don't ask..
This is the friend I got FD from in the first place, and he thinks he
remembers where he got his original Lavender & white Muscovy ducks from, so
we will be wandering around a small village 30 miles away looking for a
house he recognises. Should be fun.
Chickens are okay, getting old now, I've put my name down for 6 ex-battery
hens.

How is
Boyfriend? I'm a member of his fan club too.

He's fine. He has grown into a big beautiful cat. While the weather is
warm he likes to be out most of the time - when I say warm I don't mean the
sort of temperatures you get. Top temp here today 69f.
I'm not sure what he's up to out there, but he is perfectly safe so I like
to let him do it. I think he has a good life here. He comes and goes as he
pleases, does a bit of mousing (the ratties are getting too big, time to get
the terrier men in again) checks his food bowl frequently and sleeps on the
spare bed. He is a charming cat with a wonderful temperament.

5. When KFC moved in, did you ever think that your life would change in
so many different ways, some of them directly caused by her?

Well, yes, you cannot move from dogs to cats without your brain exploding
because you don't understand why you can tell a dog not to get up on your
worktop "twice" and it will never do it again and you can expect to do it
for the rest of your life for cats.
It's been a real learning curve.
