Arachnophobia (No longer way OT)
I wonder if that's what Adrian meant by "HDD/DVD" burner. I'm not sure what HDD stands for. Joyce HDD stands for hard disk drive, the unit I have makes it easy to copy to the hard drive and edit if needed, then copied to DVD. I use to record television programs for a friend and cut out the commercials for her. -- Adrian |

Or do you mean you copy files from the DVR to your computer, edit them, and then burn a DVD? Joyce -- It is better to give than to lend, and it costs about the same. -- Unknown |

Joyce Yes, I edit on the DVR, I usually do this with any show with commercials then delete after I've watched it. About the only time I use the computer is if I copy a DVD any reason which isn't very often. -- Adrian |

About the only time I use the computer is if I copy a DVD any reason which isn't very often. Hmm. I have a lot to learn about this stuff. See what happens when you're too cheap to keep up with technology? I don't really mind, though. Just because some executive somewhere decides we all need the absolute latest gadget, doesn't mean I'm required to plunk down my money for it the very nanosecond it hits the stores. I'll get around to it someday... when my current equipment actually needs replacing because it *doesn't work anymore*. I've had that happen before, too. It *is* freaky and more than a little disconcerting. But I've never sprayed, and never had a real infestation of spiders. I just "catch and release" for the most part. I've noticed some years are worse than others for spiders--maybe weather conditions affect their numbers. But I totally understand. *One* spider is no big deal, but seeing gazillions of them is creepy. Tarantulas are creepy just because of their sheer size. I wonder if I'm weird. I don't have a huge affinity for spiders, and I'm pretty much indifferent to them. But when I've found a spider egg sac in the house, I've always left it alone and let it hatch. It's actually kind of satisfying having a team of identical little cohort spiders wandering around the house, trying to figure out their niche. The only other bugs that I tolerate in the house are craneflies. Maybe I'm trying to make my house into a deathtrap for mosquitoes. |

I really like argiope spiders. There's always one on the porch. They get fatter and fatter, then like overnight an egg sac appears, then the spider's colors start to fade by October. It's kind of sad, and I always think about Charolette, the children's story. Sherry |

The only other bugs that I tolerate in the house are craneflies. Maybe I'm trying to make my house into a deathtrap for mosquitoes. Are craneflies the ones that look like giant mosquitoes? I think they actually eat mosquitoes, so they would be good to have in your house. I leave most spiders alone unless it's huge and crawling around in my vicinity. Actually, I leave them alone then, too, but I do get creeped out a bit. If it's on the ceiling, I don't care about it. Besides, spiders are a fun distraction for Licky. He'll sit in the middle of the room, staring up at a spider crawling along the edge where the ceiling meets the wall, and yowl at it repeatedly. I get all sorts of moths in the house and I hardly pay attention to them, unless they're those grain-eating moths that infest the pasta, etc. The kitties love to chase them. I get these small, greyish, almost ghostly looking bugs in the bathroom. They kind of slither, or at least that's how it looks. Most of the time they just scurry across the floor and disappear. Every so often I see a small fly in the bathroom. It's not the usual size fly, but pretty tiny. It's kind of cute, actually. Oh, I do know it's not the same fly every time. But it's the same type. I guess I should be grateful that I've never seen a cockroach! Joyce -- Who ever thought up the word "Mammogram"? Every time I hear it, I think I'm supposed to put my breast in an envelope and send it to someone. -- Jan King |

Yes, if I were to take a guess, those sound like craneflies, silverfish, and fruit flies, respectively. I think most bugs are pretty cute when you look closely at them. The little fly isn't a fruit fly - those tend to travel in large groups, and this type is always alone. Also, although it's smaller than the average housefly, it's bigger than a fruit fly. Also, it's always in the bathroom, rather than being near a source of vinegar. Its wings are positioned in such a way that whenever I look at them, I think, "airplane ears". I'm sure that's why I think it's cute. Silverfish, right. They tend to live in bathrooms or near other sources of water. I've seen really large silverfish in some people's houses, but the ones I get are pretty small and unobtrusive. Joyce -- May the great galactic kitten always purr you to sleep. |
