OMG!!! I missed your posting about this (I have been only spotty
about reading lately because I hadn't been using my computer at
home any more).

I did not post about it, I thought it would be boring for you all.

Gads, girl, that sounds dreadful! Are you OK now? Be *very*
careful about your neck. I learned the hard way that injuries to
the neck can show up weeks or months after a fall. If you feel the
least bit of pain in your neck, or start getting tingling in your
fingers, be sure to get yourself the to surgery as soon as you can.
Mega healing purrs on their way to you!!!

All fingers and the thumb in my left hand are numb. Doc says "it
will come right eventually" not sure what the timescale is, but 6
months now and I would have hoped to see an improvement by now.

Tweed

Oh man! Do go back to the doctor, Tweed! If it is bone pressing on
a nerve in your neck, they can fix that. But if that nerve gets too
damaged they *can't* fix that. Please don't let that go on too long!

Fluffy Tails,

CatNipped

I'm in agreement with CatNipped. How have you manged this long like this,
Tweed?

kili

Easily. If it involves another operation, I just can't do it. Not because
I am afraid of the op, but there is no-one to look after my cats/poultry
that I can ask again while I am recovering. I need a far more important
operation than that, the incisional hernia repair from my ovarian ca op
didn't work last time so I have it back again and it's a real PITA
It's not a problem at all for those of us who have partners who have not
died, or adult children who can help us. For me, dead partner, no children,
brothers always too busy. Friends I would be too embarrassed to ask to help
again.

Have read Pam's questions and your responses. It is so good to hear that you
are all in one piece with nothing broken at this time and that both of your
feline friends and your feathered pal are doing well. May this continue for
a long and pleasant time.

PS: can you tell me where you found the rehydration fluid recipe - I
would like to try it with her. Thanks!

Two tablespoons of sugar, one quarter teaspoon salt, one quarter
teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking powder) in a litre of boiled water.
I cannot tell you where I found it - I put it in my book of useful
things some years ago, I knew I would need it one day.

Tweed

Here are a few links I found with similar recipes, some don't use the
soda at all, only sugar and salt in the water. And then there are other
recipes too...

Interesting, thanks. I expect there are many recipes as good, or better
than the one I posted, but I happened to have that one written down. It
made an amazing difference to KFC. From being at death's door and being
threatened with RB in a few days time by TED before I gave it to her, she
is as fine as she ever could be with her advanced CRF. She has put on a
lot of weight - she was very frail before that and now she isn't. The
extra calories the sugar provided might have helped with that.
I was worried about whether she would drink it of her own accord so I
provided a bowl of plain water at the side of it, but she chose the
rehydration fluid in preference. The poor girl had been turning herself
inside out with diarrhoea that would not clear up so I kept her on it for
about 3 weeks.
As it possibly helps with replacing essential stuff she excretes by
drinking too much with her CRF I intend to offer her some about once a
fortnight. It can't harm her in the long term, as to be honest, she
doesn't *have* a long term so I'm not worried it might rot her teeth ;-)
No-one, not even the vets, can tell you how to keep what seems like a 200
year old cat alive. I played it by ear and it's working. She is bright
and still her feisty old self. Having said that, I do have a lot of
experience with very elderly animals over the years and might not have
risked it if I hadn't.
Although TED did say to me last time we were there "you are an elderly
animal specialist, aren't you?" I do think he would be surprised if he
saw KFC today. He would not believe it.

. Wish I had a magic answer for

the greasy
fur & mats; I bet once she does get groomed, she'll feel even better.
They seem to know when
they look pretty. :-)

I have managed to tease out a lot of the mats, very gradually. I get a
slash every time. - so it is *very* gradual.. I do one every time I pick
her up or when she jumps onto my knee. It p*sses her off, royally. Best
time is when she is eating. I can even get one from under her tummy then.

Her fur got horribly matted because she does not groom
herself now, ...

Cats get vitamin D from self-grooming. P'r'aps she should be
getting some booster shots, or at leat try getting her to lick
some margarine!

They do? Now that's an interesting fact I did not know. Where
did you find out about that?

It's in many of my cat books, and if you search on-line you
should find something authoritative. It seems the sebum (grease)
secreted onto fur by the cat reacts with sunlight to produce
Vitamin D, which is then ingested through grooming.

I'm assuming that it's the UV rays from the sunlight that trigger the
vitamin D production, is that right? If so, then indoor kitties would
need to be in front of an open window, since UV rays don't penetrate
glass. (A screen would be OK, though.) I guess if that's not workable,
you could always give her fish from time to time, or fish oil. (But
then again, KFC probably won't eat fish, since it's not chicken. )

From what I've read, the "foraminotomy" can be done on an outpatient basis
(I have Ben to help, but I can't take the time off work a major surgery
would involve). They do it arthoscopically - I haven't found out what the
recovery time is, but I see the surgeon on the 18th and I'll let you know
what he says. Of course, that's assuming you have the same type of injury
as I.

I need a far more important operation than that, the incisional hernia
repair from my ovarian ca op didn't work last time so I have it back again

*DANG*! I'm *SO* sorry you're having to deal with this again. I'm *SURE*
your friends wouldn't mind helping out again - it's not like you did this on
purpose just to get help with the animals! I know I would gladly help out
if I could, so you should mention it to them. It has to be really hard to
do your chores with that type of problem!

Purrs and purrs and purrs and purrs and purrs coming for *all* your health
issues to be resolved.

Hugs,

CatNipped

Wonderful to hear. Stinky is doing well, but I wish he would get fat!

He won't, I'm afraid. It's inevitable that dogs with CRF (and I see no
reason why it's not the same for cats) lose weight as they excrete too much
protein in their urine, even if they are eating well.
Try not to worry about it if he gets thin. It's what happens.
I admire you for doing subq with him - it would not be an option for me, as
previously discussed, not only because it doesn't seem to be allowed here
but also there is no way in the world that KFC would let me do it.
Lots of purrs for the Stinkyman - I have a soft spot for him, you know.
Particular purrs are coming from Boyfriend (very quiet ones, he can't purr
very loudly for some reason - not like KFC, half his size, who could purr
for England and can be heard upstairs from downstairs) because Stinky is his
Uncle.
