When I was a kid, we had mice once, they were given to us by a neighbor
who mistakenly bought two, one male one female, instead of two male
(stupid salesman couldn't tell the difference), and they had babies. He
(neighbor) kept the father, and all the male babies, gave us the mother
and the female babies (once they were weaned, that is). When we cleaned
their cage, we would put them in a 5 gallon bucket... until they learned
they could jump to the rim (somewhere in their ancestry was grasshopper or
flea), so then we had to start putting the lid on the bucket....
Later on we had hamsters.
No matter what people say, each animal does have it's own personality. I
raised hamsters for a while (about 16 years ago), and one litter had only
2 survivors (mom had 14 originally, but she ate the other 12), one was
male, one was female. The male cried (ever hear a hamster call? It's so
sad....) when we took them away from Mama Ham. I had to put him back in
for another day, and then he was fine. Female was off and running. The
female we named Spunky (that's what she was), and the male Baby Bear (he
was cream colored, long haired, looked like a shaggy Pooh Bear, and since
he was such a baby and cried when Mama Ham was gone... it just fit)
Now, even though we wouldn't mind having a "pocket pet" or 12 ( ), with
the cats, we don't think it's advisable....

Coco passed away yesterday during the night. She didn't have a long illness
so I'm glad of that for her.

I'm adopting 4 more mice from a small animal rescue group tomorrow. These
little wons just steal my heart with their antics. I do have a guest
bedroom where they can be kept, and it will be a NO CAT zone.

Thank you everyone for the purrs and good thoughts for my tiny friends.
Pixie is still doing ok for now.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Our non-scary purrs to Coco as she
journeys to the small-animal section of the Bridge to wait for Pixie
and you, and to Pixie, who will undoubtedly miss her friend and
partner, and to you in your grief and for your future joy with your
new friends. I hope Pixie gets to enjoy their company also.

When I was a young teenager, a neighbor boy gave me two white mice. The
next morning, there were 16 baby mice in the cage also. My mother made
me take them back to him. MLB
