She used to do this strange thing with her paw, touching it to
something, like the shelf in that picture, with her claws slightly out,
pawing at it over and over again. She always looked extremely
concentrated, her whiskers forward, and often even her whisker pads very
much extended. I never could figure out what she was doing. Just sort of
pawing at something, but it looked Very Important.

Yes, she was clearly contemplating deep issues about the Universe. Or
solving some kind of 10-dimensional math problem. That picture looks
like she's about to move a bead in an abacus.
