Hmm. although I love cats, I am not in agreement with putting a kitten in
the manger that is so important to Christians at this time. sorry. Doesn't
matter to me much but my family would be horrified. Bad taste.

I remember reading a Doonesbury cartoon where the role of baby Jesus
was played by a 40 watt light bulb. I think most folks would consider
kitten manger scenes well within the bounds of good taste. I
personally think that it's adorable. But kittens are designed to be
adorable so it's tough to think otherwise.

It's just meant to be whimsical, not religious.

Bad taste.

My little music-box has the entire holy family as cats. I can't imagine
anyone objecting, but then I'm not all that ultra-religious. (I
certainly admire the Pope for telling that grieving little boy that he
would see his dog again in Heaven - that all God's creatures are welcome
there.)

I'm agnostic these days (raised Catholic) but to me cats representing
the nativity scene isn't religious nor is it supposed to be, at least to
me. And I thought the kitten in the manger is adorable. It is just
whimsical.

I haven't set this up in a few years but I wanted to see it this
year. If
you can't tell, in the manger is a kitten. I should probably
rearrange the
figurines a little better so all can be seen better. I just love
this. The
creche I ordered from eBay, handmade. The figurines came from a
friend a
few years earlier. They needed just the right creche to display
them in.

I'd like to see a more or less conventional manger scene with a kitten
curled up next to the baby.

Joy

Now THAT would be adorable.

It is indeed whimsical! I didn't grow up in a religious household so
the whole idea of even a traditional manger scene is, to me, purely
decorative.

I always wondered about that myself and am glad to have the offical
word that pets are welcome. I wonder if the cats behave badly in
heaven?

I'm sure they act just like cats.

I'll bet they do. As far as I'm concerned, if there are no animals in
heaven, I don't want to go there.

I don't believe the Pope is allowed to make up theological doctrine
on the hoof like that.

A spoof letter writer (Henry Root?) once sent a circular to leading
figures of every religion he could find in the UK asking whether
animals went to heaven. The replies weren't what I'd have expected.
The Christian responders all said no, insofar as they gave any
understandable answer. The Buddhists said rather offensively "why
are you wasting your time with a question like that when you should
be working towards your own enlightenment?". I can't remember all
the others, but the only one to give a straight unqualified yes was
the Muslim responder.

Neither do I. Although I do hope Gods got a sense of humour or I'm in
trouble anyway.

Judith

Oh, I'm fully convinced that God has a sense of humor (spelled both
ways). I think He'd have disposed of the entire human race long ago
otherwise. Besides, look at all the funny baby critters He created.
