cat partially opens mouth and chatters teeth
my newly adopted cat was watching birds out the window this morning - his tail
started swishing a bit - then it looked and sounded like he had his mouth partially open (like when they do that smelling thing through their mouths) and it sounded like his teeth were chattering - does that happen? its possible too that it was some sort of broken meow, it was just too hard to tell whether the sound was coming from his throat or his teeth anyone know about this? thx! |

ok, i was able to catch a full sideways look at what he was doing - its not his
teeth - he is "uttering" this sound is it a common hunting noise? my other cats have never done this while looking out the windows |

We call it "cat chattering." Mine seem to do it when they see prey that they can't catch--like a bird outside the window. I've read what they're actually doing is practicing the killing bite they are about to inflict on the vertebrae of the prey...if you look, you'll see their jaws are clenched tightly. It's a weird sound, isn't it? Sherry |

Both my cats have done that and one still does. I think it is normal and not to be confused with teeth grinding. Yup. That's the "A BIRD! A SQUIRREL! GET! GET! GET!" sound. Very amusing for
hoomans. Karen "HUDAV847" wrote in message ... ok, i was able to catch a full sideways look at what he was doing - its not his teeth - he is "uttering" this sound is it a common hunting noise? my other cats have never done this while looking out the windows |
