I got a fairly early start on my Saturday errands, and was waiting at a
bus stop to catch a bus to my first destination, idly watching some
pigeons scratching at something in the road when I noticed a black and
white cat, who had also noticed the pigeons. He tried to pounce on one,
but they aren't THAT stupid, saw him coming from feet away and rather
insolently flew barely out of his reach, and almost instantly settled on
another patch of road. So he tried again And again! Three times before
the bus came, and not once did he get within a foot of the pigeons! Of
course, he was at a considerable disadvantage, because the road was
empty and not many cars were parked neaby, so he couldn't really lurk or
sneak up on them; he had to dart across bare pavement with nowhere to
lie in ambush.

But he didn't give up!

I don't know about pigeons - I think their intelligence may vary by
location. Way back when my children were young, son was 9 and
daughter 6, the whole family was on vacation doing the Williamsburg/
Jamestown thing. Driving through a park, quite slowly, we approached
a pigeon standing in the middle of the road. My DH, the driver,
simply kept going, as we ALL expected the bird to fly away...but no.
THUNK. One less pigeon on the planet. My daughter was upset, I was
stunned, DH was aghast and son, ever the wit, remarked "I guess
pigeons are smarter in Ohio, Daddy!" Broke the tension.

Perhaps that kitty would have had better luck in Jamestown...
