Spicey holds court
After two weeks, Spicey's integration into the family is proceeding
leisurely and apace, on both the person and kitty fronts. Whenever I head upstairs to be with Spicey, one or both of the incumbent kitties will often follow me, and Spicey will also come to greet me at the top of the stairs. This is how a few casual encounters have already happened. Because of the design and position of the glass barrier at the stairs, Dot and Buster always see Spicey from below, and about two feet away, while Spicey parades above them. Buster always looks worried when he sees Spicey. Understandable, as this is, after all, the boycat who breached a screen door to drive away a neighborhood cat. He hissed and puffed his tail the first time he saw Spicey, but he's calming down, and he hasn't otherwise exhibited any agitated behavior. Dot seems curious about the new girl, and comes up to the glass to watch, but her interest seems casual and academic. Spicey glances down occasionally at Dot and Buster, but is usually more interested in rubbing against my legs when I'm upstairs. She headbutts and nosekisses the now fading scars that she inflicted on me a week ago when she was less tame. I still move slowly and carefully around her so as not to trigger an attack, but every day I can see she's more relaxed. I'm currently working on getting her to let me initiate touches to her back and ears without protesting. This will be an important milestone that will allow me to medicate her, and I'm hoping it will happen in a couple of weeks. Our relationship has already come so far! |

That is great progress but I'm not really surprised. It's hard to tell what Spicey will be like in this new environment. She sounds ready to blossom. Good job. |
