Is this unreasonable? All the emails were along the lines of "Hi it's

That reaction to such a reasonable email would have got me really worried
about the safety of my pet and got me there ASAP to get my cat back. How
did they choose the cattery, was it recommended or advertised or was it a
website? Whichever it was I'd put the message out that I wasn't impressed.

Judith

It is a completely unreasonable reaction on the part of the cattery. Persia
was boarded for a long time when I came here to take care of my parents.
Not only did they not mind my calling every few days to check on her, they
called ME to tell me how she was doing. No responsible facility that takes
care of pets would complain about a pet owner calling to check on their
pets. That's just wrong.

That is completely unreasonable. I have never used a cattery, but I do use
a pet sitter. She leaves a daily log for me and also exchanges frequent
emails with me to report on Holly and Duffy.

Good on your friends for coming back early to get Ben. Is there any type of
animal protection group in the area where they can make a report to protect
others?

If this were the US, one would nail the facility Big Time on Yelp. Is there a
similar consumer rating site in Europe?

It's so far off being reasonable I have to wonder if you have the entire
story. Maybe your friends' emails were more numerous and annoying than
they realize, or someone else's were and they got a reply intended for
the other person, or the cattery employee or owner was having some kind
of personal problems or a nervous breakdown or something.

Yes, they should be used to concerned owners contacting them every few days,
and no, it is not unreasonable to do so. It's not usual to get such a
response, so are you sure they weren't e-mailing excessively? If not, it
would sound alarm bells for me.
I also don't like the fact that Ben wasn't able to be visited by friends.
I am fairly sure that catteries have to be licensed by the local authority
so they could be investigated - although it could have been that the cattery
owner got royally p*d off by continual emails as to his welfare.
However, she did not respond in a professional way, IMO.
The professional way should have been that the cattery owner responded to
every e-mail about Ben to say "he is absolutely fine." Some slaves are more
anxious than others when they leave their cats, she should surely know that
if she has a boarding cattery.
I am sure Ben will be fine when he is collected, but I wouldn't expect a
cattery owner to behave like this, and I wouldn't use them again myself.

I would have thought most catteries would expect the owners to email or call
to ask after their pets. My local shelter boards cats for friends and are
surprised if they don't hear from the owners at least once whilst they are
away. I would have cut short my trip too! I do hope Ben is ok and home
safe and sound now. We take holidays in 2's in our house so someone is there
to look after Smudgie. It's a bit of a pain but means I get 2 holidays a
year out of it

Sharon

I've heard that some catteries now have webcams so owners can see their
babies while they're away. I think that is an excellent idea.

If she's that sensitive about it, maybe there's a reason?

They have cut their holiday short to get Ben back

I'd do the same, assuming it was possible! (And I certainly would not
be enjoying my trip very much, worrying about my cat the whole time.)

Threats of lawsuits would seem to indicate that doubts about her
"professional judgement" exist! Do you have such websites as "Angie's
List" in the UK? Maybe next time your friends go on holiday, they
should double check prospective boarding kennels there, before
entrusting one with their four footed family member.

Good point, Matthew! Boarding kennels that do not recognize that their
"guests" are family members, especially if there were problems during
the first few days of boarding, should not be in that business. If lack
of consideration by the kennel-owner makes the pet's people cut their
vacation short out of worry, why should the pet-owner pay for it?

Assuming it were possible, the best solution would be to drive, and take
the pet along. However, aside from the fact that most cats are rather
poor travelers, when you're traveling between countries you run into
quarantine rules that make such a "solution" impractical. Now dogs, on
the other hand, tend to be eager for auto trips, no matter what the
destination (other than the vet, of course).

I live in the U.S., and that's a new one on me! What is it, a sort of
BBB for the pet-care industry? Where are they located?
